HiFi Kit Building- have you ever built any hifi gear?

Way back, building a hifi component from a kit was an available alternative from many manufacturers; today, not do much.

Have you ever built any gear from a kit? I’ve built two Bottlehead headphone amplifiers.

My father was an EE and started me on science fair kits in the 60's and progressed into Dynaco kits in the early 70's. Since then, I've dabbled with Audionote, Elekit. Bottlehead, Nelson Pass amp camp, and speaker kits from Madisound and Speaker city.

It's satisfying to listen to something you had an active part in.creating.

Yes indeed.  Many Heath and Allied Radio kits.  Oscilloscopes, FM Tuners, amplifiers, Ham Radios, test meters, etc. fun stuff in those days.

I've built quite a bit of Heathkit stereo equipment in the mid 70's to the early 80's.  That's all I can tell you for fear of being banned again...

I built a GAS Ampzilla kit that was way beyond heath kit or Dynaco. My Myer-Emco tech inspected it numerous times. I was also assisted by a generous Bill Thalmann who checked my work, but he didn’t remember doing this when I last spoke with him before he died. The Myer-Emco tech (Mike?) would look it over with Dwayne Self (my salesman), aiming barbs at my soldering ability and re soldering the worst (wrapping heavy wire around posts and soldering). It took a village, but the damn thing still works and gets used and sounds great 51 years later! For daily use, its offspring the SST Son of Ampzilla II gets used.
