Any experience with Magna Mano Ultra MkIII streamer

Hi,

Has someone heard the Magna Mano Ultra MkIII? Any feedbacks on how it sounds and compared to any other streamer you may have used?

I will primarily use it for Roon (Qobuz) and Spotify. And if software allows for HQPlayer NAA.

The other streamer I am considering is Holo Red streamer.

About the Magna Ultra Mk III, does anyone know if it can play DSD files and put out DoP?

As I just bought this streamer recently, thought I'd add my thoughts for those doing their research on this component to this thread despite its age (though you may also find it originally posted in another streamer related thread)..

I stream music via Tidal Connect and my existing chain consists of a third gen Bluesound Node (which, for the $350 price, cannot be faulted) connected via USB to a Holo Cyan 2 which then connects via XLR’s to my Hegel H390 and then onwards to a set of Boenicke W8SE speakers through Veritas’ Apurta speaker cables (great performers for the money).

I gave myself a $2K budget for a new streamer and settled on Holland based Magna Hi Fi’s Mano MKIII.5 streamer with its separate matching Farad 3 LPS.  Magna Hi Fi offers several optional upgrades and, after bathing in snake oil, I opted for their offered upgrades on the connecting cable for the two boxes, a fancy pants fuse and LAN isolator from Synergistic  Research.  I think their base case unit retails somewhere around $1,200 and can be upgraded down the road, if curiosity gets the better of you.

The two boxes are matched and diminutive in size but once plugged into my system, and now connected via I2s I can say without question, it makes a difference.

I don’t know why or how, but am really quite stunned at the improvement in sound quality.  Everything I stream sounds much cleaner, quieter and more detailed.  Am now a big believer in the benefits of a separate linear power supply. Also, I'd note their Level 2 silver cable works really well in a system like mine, which already has plenty of warmth.  Honestly, I would not have thought a streamer could make such a contribution to my overall sound quality but it's clearly a step forward.

I’m using the Volumio software (Magna HiFi offer several options) which is proving a solid platform for me. One downside, if you like to stream Tidal Connect natively (as I do) the optimal way to do so requires Volumio’s subscription service.  Note you can stream Tidal via the Volumio software without the subscription, but to do so natively, via the Tidal Connect app, you need to pay the piper.

I'd also add that Magna HiFi was very responsive to my pre purchase questions re software. Overall, a really great sounding bit of kit that punches above its weight. Highly recommended As always, YMMV

Adding to this old thread ...

I extensively compared Holo Red and Mano 3.5 with multiple DACs, including Tambaqui and what I eventually settled on, my very modified Mhdt Orchid.

I had been using an old streamer from Auralic for several years and had never wondered "do streamers matter" ... because of course they shouldn't.

Boy was I wrong. The difference b/w Tambaqui connected direct to ethernet and using Holo Red or Mano 3.5 makes it clear that the built in streamer is not doing this DAC any favors. Very significant and important difference.

Once I accepted that streamers matter, I explored both the Red and Mano extensively, including different linux distributions on both, and lots of work to improve my network upstream ... which also shouldn't matter, but it turns out it does.

The Holo Red is a tremendous value, and extremely flexible. It is easy to use. Its flexibility can be a little intimidating. I tried with Roon (separate Roon server) and Qobuz Connect and various UPNP clients. All work well. To my ears Gentooplayer was better than the native linux distro that comes with the unit.

The Mano is simply much better in every way, except it is less flexible. I only wanted SPDIF out via BNC, with the option for I2S down the road. Or you can choose AES, but not both, whereas with Red you have all the output options, including running it as a bridge w/ USB output. For my needs the benefits of this flexibility were not a priority.

Fast forward and now I run Audirvana instead of Roon, with a headless version running on a server and the Mano as renderer (as I did with Roon). Audirvana sounds slightly better than Roon. Gentooplayer opens the door to endless tweaks to the OS ... and that's a rabbit hole that I am not that interested in, but you can go there if you want. Magna Hifi configures their units following best practices, so it's plug and play ready to go.

I did opt for the TMCB upgrade, so don't know how to contrast w/ units that have standard fuses.

The Mano is a set it and forget it type of component. Leave it on all the time. Many new streamers have screens and apps and other bells and whistles that make them the primary interface to your system if you want. All my gear is in a closet in another room, so none of that interests me, but that's another consideration that neither the Red nor the Mano provide.

Current digital setup:
NUC w/ Fedora + Audirvana headless --> LHY switch --> Gustard NP18 --> fiber to system, all on dedicated AC sub panel --> Gustard NP18 Pro --> ethernet --> Etherregen --> ethernet --> Mano 3.5 --> BNC SPDIF -->  Orchid --> Soulution pre + rest of system

All ethernet runs are supra except b/w Etherregen and Mano, which is Audience

I have had the Mano Ultra mk3 with separate farad power supply for a long time now and it’s the best streamer I have ever own. Never one time have I had a song drop or a glitch of any kind. I have Ropieee XL software and they set up airplay with a Roon endpoint, i2s and rca connections. At the time I had the Denafrips Venus 12th anniversary and used the i2s connection sounded great, as my audio system has changed I will never sell it, it’s going into the Meitner MA3i dac/streamer which  has Qobuz and Tidal connect built in a expensive piece, I prefer airplay, what ever they did when they built this steamer airplay sounds fantastic, I have left it on for months and months and is always there when I need it…I highly recommended this streamer…
