LG vs. Sony 65” OLED

I’m moving and about to buy one of these TVs in the $1300 range and wondering if either is strongly favored for any reasons?  Sounds like the LG might be brighter/better for HDR but Sony may have better blacks/color and may be a little smoother/more film like with better upsampling and possibly better sound (I’ll be using my HT speakers for movies so not a huge deal there) but I dunno.  I won’t have an overly bright room (although glare could possibly be an issue so that could be important if one is better there) nor will I be doing much gaming so this is mainly for TV/movies, which kinda points me marginally to the Sony but love to hear thoughts.  My other main concern is reliability where both seem good but LG seems to have the edge there, which is not a small thing.

Also, I’ll be using the Ethernet connection from my router (that I’m buying separately rather than renting the crap from the cable company) instead of Wi-Fi so if anyone has found an Ethernet cable that’s made a significant improvement in the <$200 price range I’d be very interested in that as well.  Thanks!

I have a DVR with a tuner that pulls in everything local, but as you noted that isn’t the content that we want to watch.  It’s the streaming services and and my BluRay player that gets most of the use.  I use the DVR tuner primarily for NFL games because the picture is just that brighter, but frequently the weather messes with it-November/December is a windy/rainy time in Chicago.  If you use the smart TV without something like Apple TV or Roku then having a good software management program is important.

We had bought the LG OLED for my mother in law, 6 months before she passed from metastatic cancer. We wound up with it after she died when we realized that it had no resale value.  I was actually happy with the Sony that previously resided in that system, but my son was breaking up with his long term girlfriend and needed a TV for his new place and he got the Sony.  However it was important that we be able to teach my mother in law, who resided in another state, and was over 90, how to work every thing and she was able to manage it.  Her previous TV Samsung which had died was to difficult for her to operate so even though she had a Netflix account she never used it because she couldn’t figure out how to go between her cable box and Netflix.  With the LG we added Amazon and she was very happy for the last 6 months with all the new content and would happily discuss it all with my wife.

Presumably we all might be just a bit more tech savvy so this is probably a non issue, but whenever we have guests that spend the night I usually have to do the remote control duties, unless they have brought a nine year old with them.

Bought an LG OLED 65" 4K at Best Buy in 2025 because of the price (around $1000). The picture looked great at the store, and it looks even better in my house. I had no idea how much of a difference it would make. Best TV purchase I've ever made.

@soix   FWIW our Sony TV's have been stone cold reliable for years. However they are not OLED if that matters.

I’ve had both LG G and C models for the past twelve years, which have been rock solid with ink-like blacks. In between, we had a Sony XBR LED which had poor blacks and a user interface that seemed dated compared to LG’s. I’ve heard great things about some of Sony OLED models, but at the time of research two years ago LG seemed to be more consistent with performance across their lineup per RTINGS.com. Again, I think it really depends on the model and whether you’ll be using something like the AppleTV (highly recommended) or the televisions apps.

LG. Latest is slightly better and price wise as wuch

LG has been a class leader for awhile now with thier mini pixel technologies and bigger processors , you have to watch Sony at the stores , my friend is a manager there. If you try to bring your own blu ray to compare normally no.

for Sony pays a advertising contract in the U.S and many times partially calibrated

and a super high Rez bluray demo is used .. please remember All tv sets are not close to optimal at the store they just throw up the color temp and contrast .

myself spent the $400 and have my Set professionally calibrated it takes 3-4 hours

but we’ll worth it  do it it 3-4 years , buy a good blu ray player like the Panasonic for $1k , and optical cable I bought a AQ vodka and gives nice picture ,and use the hdmi out into your tv for sound .
