I have G.A.S(never gets old:) Son of Ampzilla, Thaedra, Grandson all rebuilt by Mike Bettinger. They are ready for another 20-30yrs. with some care. First real pieces of audio gear I bought right out of H.S. in the early 80’s. So it was always a great memory listening to music with these. And the opportunity arose several years ago to pick some of these units up and get them rebuilt. Also have a California Labs Delta Transport that’s serves me well. Vintage gear still produces great sound.
Gone but not forgotten
What HiFi makers that are now out of business do you miss? Personally, I can think of 2 brands that made great gear and are gone and that I miss - Nakamichi is one- and that was inevitable as the cassette world virtually disappeared. The other was California Audio Labs- I thought they made genuinely good digital gear.

Grate American Sound... GAS Ampzilla, delivering a solid 200 watts per ch with the Thaedra Preamplifier, with this pairing together the sound was amazing. Scientific Audio Electronics... SAE, the Sae A501 delivering 250 watts per ch, and the A1001 delivering 500 watts per ch with DEEP SMOOTH BASS and get out of town dynamics. After being recapped and restored back to specs, both of the companies from the pass power amplifiers and preamps can still outperform some of today's so-called high-end amplifiers in their price range and above. Grate day and Peace to All |
Which Nakamichi is gone? I’ve just moved and have been eyeing the Nakamishi Dragon wireless surround to eliminate wires everywhere. |
