If all else fails, as @sparksgja says, TMR is your default. Of course they will cherry-pick. But they do make things easy. Get it boxed and they whisk it from your doorstep, no shipping costs.

Search n learn that a $1m system went for maybe 15% of that in a well organized auction… the unknown status of each component is a talisman to value. TMR is good for the more modern gear. 
I am truly sorry for the loss of your friend 

I've purchased three times from an estate sale and understand the delicacy of dealing with family. There isn't a place to be assertive about a pricing agreement. I do believe the intermediary support will go a long way, as made offers do not need to be made known unless the family agrees that any value offer should be presented. The intermediary can work as a filter and leave the family to process and grieve loss.

On my first occasion, I accepted an asking price and drove a 250-mile round trip to pick up.

On my second occasion, which was the same estate sale purchased from over the course of nearly a year. Two Intermediaries were involved: the individual supporting the family and others who were informed of the sale and receiving inquiries to pass on. My offers were accepted, and on two occasions I travelled a 900-mile round trip to bring home the items.

 All three occasions gave me access to audio equipment I became very, very fond of. 

Hello tomic601; thanks, I understand and under the circumstances expect that I'll have to settle for low prices. I know that most if not all of the gear will need some sort of tweaking before it's in good form, so I suppose a low price is fair for gear with an X-factor. 

I really appreciate your kind words. The guy was my friend and my wife's cousin. My wife is the executrix, which is both an honor and a terrible job. 

Hello pindac. Wow, 900 miles for gear! It sounds like the trips were worth it and you really like what you bought. I'm sure it helped the family out, too. Helping my wife handle the process, from grunt work carrying and cleaning to trying to sell things to satisfy debts has really made me think that I need to prepare for the inevitable more. In fact, my birthday is tomorrow and that's another reminder that I'm almost 70. Time flies! Thanks, my friend, for your thoughts and for sharing your experiences!
