Vinyl Storage Options

I have a large vinyl collection that I would like to store in my dedicated music room.  I have around 700-1000 albums that I would like to store one level high.  Looking at some custom options that are running around $5,000 - $7,000.

Looking for others experiences in this regard.

Thanks.

I built all of mine from scratch using 8 foot pine 2x12s.  If you have a friend with basic woodworking skills, a compound miter (or even a handheld circular saw) and a router (3/4" flat bit), it’s a fairly simple project to complete using basic dado joints.  The nice part of constructing them yourself is that you can custom fit them to any size, and they are rock solid (unlike the Ikea options).  It’s also a LOT cheaper.

It is not that difficult to make your own. There is a picture in my virtual system with some I made from 1" finished plywood. The L-shape makes it extremely stable. Just make sure that the horizontal components are continuous and the vertical slots are in sections, except end-pieces.

If you want longer sections, go with hardwood. I made a second unit built into a closet from 1" red oak with about 3 foot sections. Mechanical stability of hardwood is MUCH higher than plywood or MDF (used in Ikea etc. furniture). With fewer vertical separators, you get more storage space per linear foot. There is zero flex on the 3 foot sections even fully loaded with records.

The only things you need is a track saw (or table saw) and a router. Some glue, maybe either screws or dowels. Done.

Alphabetical, without the need to keep moving them around: I limit myself to 1 in/1 out, OR, even better 1 in/2 out and limited myself to 18 lf total (actually 17lf lps + 12 dividers/6/row). roughly 8 to an inch max, best to leave some space

2 rows 9 feet long at easy height, one just above, 1 just below standing eyeball height, no bending, no reaching,

I have alphabet dividers,

I installed 8lf of strip light overhead, close so you don’t make a shadow.

note: mine are hardwood library shelves I inherited with recessed metal tracks for thin adjustable dividers. I put them on top of the case’s shelves, and they are only 11" deep, so you can get them in/out more easily

One way to prevent sag is to limit the width to 30" wide case, so the shelf is only +/- 28" long

I much prefer record store style display and access of my collection. I use DIY shelf. See system under details.

However, this is a commercial product which looks great.

You’d need 2-3 units. They sell metal or wood versions in different sizes.
