Lamp cord and speaker hanger audiophiles

I am retired now, but while I was working - I had probably a dozen or more coworkers within different departments reach out to me about system building.

The enthusiasm was certainly there - but what’s missing is their commitment to actually building a system; or a decent one at that.

These so-called gentlemen were the same people who pulled up to corporate dinners in their semi-high end luxury cars (i have a Bentley so I’m not picking on anyone) but it seems the best most of them could afford was BMW or Mercedes Benz. I sold my Maybach last year and acquired a Bentley; and I’m never going back!

With that said - the point I’m trying to get across is  - they have the MEANS to spend, (doesn’t have to be excessive) but cheap out on everything. You find out later that they’ve been leasing their vehicles, don’t own any or very basic real estate, etc.

Sometimes they complain when a steak dinner is about 50 dollars or a pasta dish is just over 30 dollars. This is not even expensive. I told some of them to get with the program, and they apologized to me in person and over email.

And with rising gas prices, they’ve been complaining even more, and trying to save money at every turn.

These guys don’t really live their lives. They just live to exist and impress their wives - You know, happy wife - happy life. And they are miserable.

Before I retired, one such fellow was annoying the daylights out of me.

Showed me an all plastic low-fi system from the 1990s that he had inherited from his deceased brother. Told me he had 100 dollars to spend to make it sound better. I told him that was not good enough considering the amplifier was just so lousy.

Well guess what? He passed away a month ago. He died in his sleep. He was going through a very turbulent marriage and his daughter wanted to move to Nigeria to live with some guy she met online.

The one thing he told me that he had was - alone time, because his wife would barely talk to him. It’s sad and unfortunate that he never got to enjoy his money.

He was earning about 150k a year, which is kind of okay.

What’s not okay was trying to save money at every turn. You can’t take any of the things you acquire with you; and we only have this one life...

He was the perfect example of a lamp cord and speaker hanger audiophile.

At one point, he tried using bent coat hangers on speaker terminals. I am actually serious. he found an article that was linked to Audio Science Review.

Godspeed.

I recall when I was a particular type of personality and was expressing exuberance in abundance, and the Old Wise Colleague would try to give me gentle guidance by stating, " That's some hole you're digging for yourself"

I recall when I sensed failure was near and I was to be called out, triggering my becoming increasingly defensive, the same person would state, "If you can't take the heat, get out of the Frying Pan".

Oh Poo, am I doing Mirror Psychology again with my reminiscing about what looks like plagiarised similarities between two individuals starting to bond.

Anyway, I should know much better now, as such episodes are seemingly more than 40 years ago when I didn't know any better.

Today I get amused by my informing a pre-teen grandchild, "That's some hole you're digging for yourself"

I'm always compared wondering why people don't like high and audio who have the money to Life by and audio with why don't give two craps about a high-end video projector or an amazingly well constructed outdoor kitchen and things to that matter. I guess I can appreciate them but I just don't care enough and if I had the money or not spend my money on those things. My Costco TV is good enough for me, as is my ancient Weber grill. And yes, I have had people giving me advice and Urgent on how to upgrade my visual experience and outdoor cooking experience but I still don't give a crap. The same with most people and high-end audio.

@simao

I enjoyed reading your post.

The truth for most people is --- It’s a lot of effort/ time/ work/ dedication. For some, it is like painting a portrait of a landscape that is never truly finished, and that is intimidating for some.

Now I’m not saying that every non-audiophile out there thinks this way, but after asking some family members who said "I don’t care about sound quality" or some variation of it, I dug this out of them.

Most people just want to enjoy their lives in an easy way, and some who are working crazy hours at the office just want to simplify, rather than have another quest to work on afterhours.

Now after these folks heard my system, they were amazed, listened for hours, and sometimes even ask to visit my home again so they can listen for a 2nd,3rd etc. time.

It really is delightful when you can have people appreciate your hobby.

Yet, they won’t build a system of their own. They don’t want to invest the time, money, effort, etc. They are afraid of becoming obsessed and developing some kind of OCD for audio, they tell me.

Now after these folks heard my system, they were amazed, listened for hours, and sometimes even ask to visit my home again so they can listen for a 2nd,3rd etc. time.

Why don't you post pics of this awesome system? Or at least give details about it.

Maybe one day.

I already had someone make me feel guilty for the fact that he’s poor and I’m rich. I’m sorry, I worked hard and earned a living, grew up poor, made it rich all on my own. It’s not something I feel I need to apologize for, but I felt bad and tried to be nice anyway. Said I was sorry... oh so so sorry.

I’ve already got people sending me hate mail because I mentioned earlier that I’m rich and have a Bentley.

Wouldn’t want more negative Nancy’s and sour sailors attacking me for existing at this time.
