The MA3i is over my budget. It was buy the MA3 or stay with my mid-tier Moon 280D, or buy something else for about $5K. I think I made the right decision, partly because when I read reviews of the MA3 before the upgrade, people love it. The MA3 couldn't have gotten worse. In this world there will always be something better and I will always have limited money. So, I think I did the best I could. I'm surprised you Meitner guys who would have told me absolutely to buy the MA3 before the upgrade are being downers. I would have expected a that a boy. I listened, I did something rather than nothing, and I'm told I bought a piece of ***** I'll wait until it comes and evaluate it for myself. I'll be nice and not characterize your behavior.
Does anyone have a digital system that is as involving as their analogue front end?
I have a good analogue front end. Not stratuspherically good but good enough for this comparison. VPI Prime Signature 21 turntable, Pass Labs XP-25 pono preamp, Pass Labs XP-30 preamp and Hovland Radia amp. It has a lovely, very involving sound. On the right recording, I just drop everythng and am drawn in to listen.
My streamer, on the other hand, is decent but not spectacular. It is better than my CD player, but it is not jaw-dropping like my analogue front-end. My question is this: does anyone have a high-end, tier-one streamer (dCS Bartok Apex, Lumin X2, or something like them) that can rival a good analogue system?

@audio-b-dog when I got the MA3 I compared it to Bricasti M3 that I owned at the time. Meitner sounded better to me. It was more natural and open sounding. |
@audio-b-dog also I’m not sure how I managed to get you so fired up. I never said you bought a POS. You gotta dial that schiit down you grumpy bastard. Lol |
You said, " honestly I would skip it or send it for am upgrade shortly after receiving it. The new MA3i is on a different planet." So, let me give you an analogy so you might understand what I'm talking about. You're raving about your new upgrade, the MA3i, and some dude drops in and says, "Honestly, I would skip it. The DV2i is on another planet. I wouldn't even bother with the MA3I." I did like your second response, however, and thank you for that. When I was posting on the Jazz Afficianados thread, people were not even supposed to say what their hardware was. Some of the people could not afford a system and listened on their phones or radios. It was only about the music. I slipped up once and mentioned how good the jazz sounded through my speakers and somebody schooled me. I just talked about jazz from then on. I have a wife and family, so I must limit my stereo outlay. Obviously, I have a far more expensive system than a phone, but I'm careful not to make others feel bad or inferior. Anyway, from your second post, I think you get it. |
