NOS tubes

I have a Rogue RP-1. The previous owner sent a set of NOS(?) tubes with the stock tubes. The boxes these tubes came in are labeled like this:

JAN 12AU7

AF 30(635)4462

Date Packed FEB 1959

Philco Corp. Phila., Penna

What does all that mean (I think the JAN stands for Joint Army Navy, but what does that mean)

Are these installing and trying?

Thanks Ron G.

Like most military requisitions, they probably just double the price for the same tubes and stamp JAN on them. Nobody really follows up to see if they're more durable than commercial ones.

I worked at Intel in the 70s and 80s and processed many JAN products.  They were processed to JAN specifications but were physically the same as other parts.  They had a more rigorous burn-in and were tested to tighter specs than the normal product lines.

Bill has it right ^^^^^^^^ tested to higher standards and a paper trail to match - I delivered billion dollar products to the usg… of course your opinion is yours….

@tomic601 ,

What is usg?

Probably US Government

As to tubes in RP1…best sound I had was with Brimar CV4003 from upscale audio

Second best with Gold Lions. Didn’t like JAN, RCA Cleartop, Tungsram. Stock JJs are quiet and reliable but don’t sound as good as Brimar or GL.
