Help me clarify, is there a difference between 'forward' and 'bright'?


Previously I posted about my Acoustic Energy AE500s that had a loose connection, now all taken care of and sounding fabulous. I was, at one point, considering selling due purely to sudden financial surprises, but as of now hope to keep enjoying and keep them. Purveying a few reviews out of curiosity, I read some that note a slight ’forward’ quality, others elsewhere observe a ’warm and musical’ presentation. (Funny how different reviewers can hear opposing sonic qualities). Others heard a touch of brightness due to extended high frequencies. Got me thinking where is the line between ’bright’ and ’forward’? aren’t splashy 1980s JBL L100s both forward, as in immediate in the presence range, but also ’hot’ or bright with snare and cymbals? Are there forward speakers that are rather warm or rolled off? Just trying to understand a bit better. Anyone care to opine?

I've owned (still do) horn speakers that are certainly "forward" which I consider part of their charm (I'm currently enamored with Neo magnet Beyma polymer drivers into a laminated wood horn). Well designed horns aren't overly bright, they simply get the sound to your earballs with some gusto, unlike the vast majority of speakers with the "tweeters stuck on a box" designs that also work but are far less efficient. 

Hi , In regards to your comment about the 80’s JBL 100’s, I totally agree. I have a pair of seldom used 4312A’s which are the near field studio version with the Ti tweeter. Since they were designed for mixing they do not work well for casual listening as they are not so much forward , but Harsh and Bright. With placement and tubes they can become slightly tolerable.  My experience with forward Vs bright became noticeable for me about 10 years ago while tube rolling with a modest system. Rogue RP-1, Had Inspire, Zu Omens. I had a Schiit Yiggy and a Thorens TT, power filter and nice cabling. While tube rolling with the single input tube on the Had Inspire I found very noticeable differences with various nos tubes like Tekefunken, Seimens CCa, Amperex, ect. While brightness variation was minimal, there was a forward / rearward effect within the music. For example the tube that was brighter sounding actually put the top 1/3 of the frequency range more out into the room. In other words I found a greater depth and soundstage. Some of the lower quality tubes I tried ( of course less expensive) did not exhibit this instead having more brightness ( or glare if you prefer ). I did quite a bit of tube rolling prior to trying any room treatments as the room was fairly forgiving due to furniture, carpet and drapes. I hope my ramble might be of some use to you. I had a pair of 4408A, actually enjoyed them, have mixed feelings about letting them go. Always in search of the next one, the audio equivalent of the 'Hi Fidelity' movie with John Cusack, always think 'the next one' will be IT. Currently enjoying my AE500s immensely, also have an interesting pair of Royd Envoys I'm debating if I want to keep or not. They are gorgeous sounding as well. Decisions...

I think it is  more fun to distinguish between the difference of forward and bright with and audiophile than with their equipment:-)  I know many audiophiles who are forward, but not very bright:-)  Think of all of the possibilities:-)
