Pondering REL and Dynaudio subwoofers.

I recently got a rel classic 99 subwoofer, which sounds excellent and matches perfectly with my dynaudio heritage specials.  A thing is it has a well documented issue of a hum when my class D  Orchard Audio Starkrimson Ultra is powered off (also use Freya+ F).  I'm trying various methods to resolve that,.  Another option is to return that sub and get a dynaudio sub. 6.  I'm finding many features of the sub 6 being very intriguing.  DSP and matching base mgt with my Heritage specials.  I don't have a typical listening room, So my acoustics are not the best.

I'd be curious to hear any opinions on either the classic 99 or Sub 6.

I had an HGS10 and 12 as well as DD12 and DD15. I did the sub crawl method beck then. I couldn't get good results with either of the DD's on board processor.

@gotolondon2 A well experienced time with Velodyne. If something happens to my DD Plus' I'll defiantly audition the Dynaudio, thank you.

My home sub history begins in 1967 with an Octavium. The mastering engineer who sold me the sub cabinet built a gain attenuator with a single channel parametric EQ. He taught me how to locate the the rooms standing waves for sub placement (the crawl) back then.

By the late 70's an M&K servo sub. In 83' I switched to 18" Velodyne subs who where just thirty minutes away beginning with the ULD. Then the F Series, HGS, DD and currently two DD-12 Plus'. Rather than meerly suggesting a "TIP" in the DD manual, after unboxing in the Plus manual Velodyne adopted the crawl as the first setup step for proper room integration.

The DD Plus was a total upgrade from cabinet, driver to software. The DD Self EQ was replaced with Auto EQ. With the Sweep Tones now on CD they're simultaneously played through the mains and the sub for very effective speaker / sub integration.

Manual adjustments were greatly simplified by the development of the Frequency Response and Parameters screen which was never reviewed by the major periodicals. Instead of making a single adjustment with the DD then exiting the program to listen to the effect with the Plus it's now done by drag and drop on the fly adjusting up to five parameters. Incredibly less time consuming and a far more productive result in presentation. As always a sub system without a remote is no fun.

All the best, cheers. M

Wow, You have a lot more experience with Velodyne than I do. It sounds like I should have gotten the plus models. I didn't know they made subs as far back as the late 60's. I pretty much grew up in radio stations and recording studios as a kid. It is probably where I got this bug in the first place. I got my first Velodyne in the early nineties. Up until recently they were my favourite sub. I did burn through an amp with both one HGS as well as one of the DD's (I cannot remember which ones). At the time I lived in So Cal so sending them to San Jose wasn't a big deal. Now, I am not sure where they are working out of. I also have not been able to listen to any of their newer versions.

I really liked the JL's, but they didn't dig as deep as either the Velodynes, nor the SVS. Granted, I had the version 1's of the '112' ( I think that is what they were called).

At the moment, in the California house we have all SVS - pair of SB16 ultras, which are really a fun sub, although not as accurate as the Velodynes or the Dynaudio. also have an SB 14,  and an Sb 12 pro. The 12 is my least favourite of those. Just not in the same league as the others. I also have a 3000 micro in my home office in London which is about to be replaced by the Dyn 18S I was testing.

All of this being said, the Dyn sub really surprised me. I had previously watched the above linked video from the garage guy, and then the video from Absolute Sound. I got the 18S and cannot un-ring the bell. It was like getting a better version of my Velodyne's. I haven't heard the Plus version of the DD but I am sure they sound amazing.  Also, I tried the Dyn primarily due to the fact that SVS are double the price here in the UK as they are in the US. I am glad I did. it is the best sounding sub I have heard to this point. Very pleasantly surprised.

Thanks for writing your experience with subs. You have a lot more than I and it brought back some very nice memories.

Cheers!

Ken

To wrap this up, I ended up trading the REL Classic 99 for the Dynaudio Sub 6, and what an improvement it turned out to be!  (No hum btw)  Set up with DSP in a Preamp → Sub 6 → Amplifier → Heritage Specials configuration, it genuinely transformed a two‑way speaker system into a full three‑way design with seemingly bottomless bass extension.

The bass is clean and precise, and because the Sub 6 takes over the heavy lifting down low, the Heritage Specials no longer strain to reproduce those deepest frequencies. Their midrange opens up, becomes more effortless, and the entire presentation feels more balanced and controlled. With Dynaudio speakers in particular, this integration is a fantastic match.

The REL in hindsight added bass response to the system, but it wasn’t participating in the overall system response the way the Sub 6 does. The Heritage Specials were still trying to cover the full range, and the REL 98 was more of an addition than a true extension.

Thanks to all that have contributed to this thread!
