Advice on speaker cables.
Hello. First time post here and I understand there’s no definitive answer, just looking for advice. I have a midrange system to me anyway and most of it was purchased new recently after giving up on repair of vintage gear. I’ve been using the same 12 gauge Apature copper speaker wire since 1982 and figured I would upgrade. I didn’t realize the hole I was going down. I’ve tried Blue Jean 10 white sounded dull, as well as WBC 7 gauge which I somewhat liked except bass seemed boomy at the expense of treble and midrange. Cables I’ve been advised to try are Kimber 4pr or 8pr as well as Audio Analysis oval 12. I’ve only used bare wire in the past not sure if that matters. My system is Yamaha as1200, Cxn100 streamer, Rotel 1572 mkii cd, Nakamichi oms1a cd. Speakers are Polk monitor 10a I bought new in 1982 with recently upgraded clarity cap crossovers. All interconnects are WBC. Appreciate any advice on speaker cables. Thank you.
Mogami cables offer excellent value and are neutral-sounding.. A large percentage of recording studios use Mogami for good reason. Kimber speaker cables are also good with low inductance but high capacitance. Some amps get fussy when driving large capacitive loads If you're going to change speakers in the future, Mogami would be an inexpensive and safe choice. |
@turnbowm the Mogami 3103 was what I was going to try initially. That’s after the first two cables I tried that didn’t better my 40+ year old 12 gauge. I was really impressed with these Kimbers. However today I experienced what audphile1 had told me to expect. The highs disappeared and the bass was strong. That’s after hearing everything I liked initially.. I thought since I bought these demo from Kimber, that they’d have a lot of time on them. But I’m going to ride it out, I could return them. But they sounded to good initially. |
To @kmm84 it will be interesting when you report back after a week of them sitting, playing, not touching them, and will you hear them changing and opening back up? Many here like to share that no such thing occurs, and all cables are the same, while others report real changes after cable coil-up tension releases, and they settle in :) |
