Modwright LS-100, Rogue RP-7, Aesthetix Calypso

I currently own a Rogue RP-1 and am looking to upgrade. Budget is ~2,500 (used). I have shortlisted the following 4 preamps:

  • Rogue RP-7 (V1)
  • Aestetix Calypso (Standard)
  • Modwright LS-100
  • Modwright SWL 9.0 AE

In order of preference: smoothness, dynamics, moderate to light warmth, detail, soundstage.

It is being paired with a Classe CA-2200 amp, Laiv uDAC+uDDC, and a pair of Audio Concepts Jaguar 2000s.

I like how the RP-1 has the dynamics and detail of a SS but also adds some tube warmth and smoothness.

Would love to hear your experience with any of these 4 preamps individually, how they compare, or how you would characterize their sound.

Thanks!

Years back I owned a Rogue Magnum 99. Never thought it was any better than a CJ pre it replaced. At one point had the SWl 9.0 and liked it very much. Sold that and went to a SS pre for a couple years, but soon tired of it. Went to a LS 100 and have stayed with it . Still a current model and Dan Wright and company are second to none in customer service should it ever be necessary..My 2 cents...

No experience with Aesthetix...

The Modwright LS100 fits your wants and is very responsive to tube rolling.  Has good detail and dynamics, but never bright and is a bit on the warmish side.

I asked about tube preamps that included both MM and MC phono capability.

Even if you do not need or want phono, some comments from members might give you some insight.

An example: this unit has an amazing feature set, however several members in that and another thread mentioned NOISE.

You might check the details of any seller’s return policies before you buy. Perhaps, before you buy, get them to say in writing that it is not noisy, just in case it is.
