@laginz can't VR supply you with replacement drivers? Seems if your speaker checks all the boxes that would be a much less expensive alternative.

I'm 99% sure that Von Schweikert doesn't have replacement bass drivers. I don't know who the original manufacturer was, but Albert Von Schweikert had them apply a coating to the cone of the drivers. I'm not sure if it added stiffness, or what. I don't know if they still do it, but Von Schweikert did have a program where you could send your VR-4s to them and they would replace all of the drivers and crossovers as a big upgrade. It wasn't cheap, so I opted to go with new speakers instead and pass my VR-4s down to my kids. Matt at VS is very helpful. I've also had phone conversations with Damon Von Schweikert and Leif Swanson. Very nice people. |
I would take a look at Fyne Audio F-702's. With a sub or two they will give you superb imaging and tonal qualities, and a great sound stage. When I bought mine, I originally regretted not getting the F-703s, with the 10" woofers vice the 8", but the addition of the two subs made all the difference in the world. I am using mine with two Rythmik F12se subwoofers, and the sound is simply superb. This combination with two subs would be just about $200 over your price limit, plus tax, of course. This combo is "end-state" for me. https://upscaleaudio.com/products/fyne-audio-f702-floorstanding-loudspeaker-pair |
