Von Schweikert VR-4 RIP…..what’s next?

Sadly these speakers are just wearing out, after close to 30 years of loyal service. Any suggestions for replacement with impactful bass, big soundstage, immediacy, good detail and a neutral tonal balance ? Would like to keep it under 15 grand.

One of my friends (that I gained from sneaking my personal info to on this site) has them. They are amazing. One of his tweeters is blown, he intends to restore them, I have to wonder if others out there have sources. They are going to be hard to move on from. Best of luck deciding.

I heard those Ushers, playing my familiar music, in a terrific space, they were quite impressive.

Bass Driver giving Out? Cones and surrounds do weaken in effectiveness, so gradually we don't notice, until we wake up and realize .......

As it happens, yesterday I switched my ElectroVoice 15W 15" woofer on the left side. Made in 1958, happily I had a spare. It is so much more productive than the right side. I used my last new driver, and have 1 cone/coil kit downstairs, so I will re-cone my right side.

Then, I better keep my eye out for spares. I'm not that old. They are too big for my son's wife, but he could make a Man Cave somewhere in his big house, or I'm sure my friend with my prior JSE Infinite Slope Model II's will want them, he loves both, and has the room.

It's a problem moving our great stuff to the next generation, I always thought they would fight over it!

@laginz  can't VR supply you with replacement drivers? Seems if your speaker checks all the boxes that would be a much less expensive alternative.

I'm 99% sure that Von Schweikert doesn't have replacement bass drivers.  I don't know who the original manufacturer was, but Albert Von Schweikert had them apply a coating to the cone of the drivers.  I'm not sure if it added stiffness, or what.

I don't know if they still do it, but Von Schweikert did have a program where you could send your VR-4s to them and they would replace all of the drivers and crossovers as a big upgrade.  It wasn't cheap, so I opted to go with new speakers instead and pass my VR-4s down to my kids.

Matt at VS is very helpful.  I've also had phone conversations with Damon Von Schweikert and Leif Swanson.  Very nice people.

I would take a look at Fyne Audio F-702's.  With a sub or two they will give you superb imaging and tonal qualities, and a great sound stage. When I bought mine, I originally regretted not getting the F-703s, with the 10" woofers vice the 8", but the addition of the two subs made all the difference in the world. I am using mine with two Rythmik F12se subwoofers, and the sound is simply superb.  This combination with two subs would be just about $200 over your price limit, plus tax, of course.  This combo is "end-state" for me.
