Preamp output impedance, Amp input impedance and drive ratio? Pass Labs XA25

Yeah for now since it's my secondary room I'm trying to use older gear to start as much as I want to buy more gear lol.  

Schiit Yggy DAC is primary source for now going into Placette into XA25 to Acora MBR-1 speakers.  Then see what it sounds like!  Loving my VanityPro HDMI audio extractor to AES XLR into Yggy for TV audio.  M4 mac mini USB into Yggy for Roon.  Phono down the road.  Waiting for more DACs to input I2S input so I can play my SACDs.  

Its all about gain.

This forum is full of "info" that simply muddies the waters of music enjoyment. Example: Did you know that respected (!) professional gear reviewers often live with ZERO room treatment? For SHAME! Impedance matching is fine to obsess over if your compulsion runs in that direction, but I’ve never done that because it simply never seems necessary...chalk that up as a non issue, lessoning stress and lengthening my life. I switch between a single ended tube amp (handmade Dennis Had with few published specs) and a Pass XA-25. I don’t know if those "properly match" my trusty Schiit Freya but when listening to these amps I never think, "man, sounds great but does the impedance balance?" The compulsion to pontificate with a display of alleged vast knowledge of audio minutia might help some with those pesky insecurities but does it make violins sound more violinny?

wolf_garcia LOL yes I agree.  It's more the engineer in me and not being able to make a decision because I hadn't done my research.  I'm just going to use my Placette since I own it and then go from there.  ChatGPT was just warning me that I want my drive ratio 80 or above and to avoid any preamp with a really high output impedance like 5,000 ohms.  Would be interesting to hear the difference but don't have that much time on my hands!

As others have mentioned, gain is key- especially with the Pass XA25 because it has a very low 20db gain.  

A higher gain preamp will get the most out of it in terms of sound that has contrast and separation and not just monotone.  

I used the XA25 with my Cary Audio SLP-05 (23db gain) and had amazing results. 

The Cary SLP-98L is a lower cost option that has 20db gain and sweet sounding 6SN7 tubes.  Get yourself some 50’s NOS Sylvania and you’re set.  

As for output impedance, it has 440ohms and the magic ratio is 10:1, so you would want a power amp input impedance of minimum 4400 ohms.  Since the XA25 has 47,000 ohms input impedance you are covered.
