["@ryder A lot of people advocate a minimum of 2 subs but some rooms (including mine) can’t accommodate more than 1 either due to the size or arrangement.

How Much Do Your Subwoofer(s) Cost Relative to Speakers
For people who own subwoofers in the main system, I am interested to know the price ratio of the subwoofer to speakers in your system. Prices in MSRP.
Say if the subwoofer(s) cost $10,000 and speakers cost $10,000, the ratio would be 1 : 1.
If the subs cost $5,000 and speakers cost $10,000, the ratio would be 1 : 2.
If the subs cost $3,333 and speakers cost $10,000, the ratio would be 1 : 3.
Mine is at about 1 : 3.5

List price for Dynaudio Confidence 20s is $14K. List for a pair of REL T/5X subs is $1.6K. List = 1:8.75 I paid less than list for both the Confidence 20s and the T/5Xs. Actual = 1:10 The REL subs offer excellent value relative to the speaker cost for the significant bass boost and SQ enhancement. I consider the T/5Xs to be the best value audio purchase I made. |
I am using my old REL r305 in my second system. It was in my main system for 16 years. That is a 2:1 ratio given the subs original $1600 price. My main system has a pair of Forte IV. I needed a sub last year but my daughter was getting married so I needed to keep the budget tight. I don't always use a sub in that room. Mostly for movies. I ended up buying an Earthquake MiniMe dsp12 for $675 delivered. It turned out to be a really good sub for the money. Has DSP room EQ. So that's about 8:1. In a perfect world I would have a REL Carbon or something like that in there but maybe someday. |
How would I list a price for Do it Yourself Subwoofers? To me they are priceless. I use the best subwoofer drivers available at the time, build an enclosure with the most solid material and bracing possible, and finish them in solid Oak hardwood boards. I have three rooms but my 2-channel room speakers and stands list for $25,000 and I use a 3rd identical $12,500 speaker for a center channel for when my stereo preamp is in Home Theater Bypass mode.
