Help me mod my tube amp
Hi all,
I'm interested in modifying my Prima Luna Dialogue 4 amp. The amp is about 15 years old and still sounds pretty good. But in the past I've had fun modding preamps and speakers and seeing what can be improved, so I'd like to try improving the SQ of this amp. I haven't modded an amp before, so I open to suggestions about capacitor upgrades or anything else. You can see a picture of the internals of the amp here. This amp resides in a secondary system, which is:
Mac mini --> Benchmark Dac3 --> Prima Luna Dialogue 4 amp --> Dali Phantom S-180 speakers + Rhythmik F12G-SE-PEQ subwoofer (via high level speaker input)
Power: dedicated line --> Maestro outlet --> Shunyata Hydra 8 power conditioner. Cables are Shunyata and DH Labs.
Current tube configuration in Prima Luna amp: GE Military stock 12AU7, Gold Lion 12X7, Tung Sol KT120
These days, I tend to like things on the slightly warm side of neutral. I appreciate increased resolution, but not at the expense of organic tonality and musicality. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi baaach, Thanks for asking for an update. I've been listening pretty much daily since the upgrade (2-3 hour per day), so the caps and NOS tubes (Amperex, Brimar) are nicely burned in. The sound is pleasing to my ears. I know it's an overused descriptor, but it sounds musical. Resolution is good, and backgrounds are black. I have been thinking of some additional upgrades just for fun. I am thinking of upgrading the 22µF/450V Nichicon capacitor next to the 12AX7s with an Audio Note Kaisei elecrolytic cap. I am also thinking of upgrading the .47µF/630V Swellong bypass cap on the power supply with a V-Cap ODAM or possibly a Mundorf supreme or a Dueland JDM. Open to suggestions. Also, in spite of someone's reassure in this thread that the resistors in the amp are Takman, I asked Gemini and it told me that the resistors in the PL Dialogue 4 are NOT Takman. My amp is not the PL Dialogue Premium, which is apparently when PL started using Takman resistors. If my resistors are in fact some generic industrial grade stuff, I am considering upgrading some/all of those as well. Again, open to input if anyone has recommendations. Thanks all, Bryon |
Hovland caps are terrific sounding and they continue to hold up with no sign of going bad. Audio Note parts are also terrific new choices. Resistors can be a bit tricky. A builder I know who makes ultra high end gear uses old carbon composition resistors where they matter to the sound because he likes the thicker sound they deliver. He knows that they don’t don’t hold their values and can become noisy sooner than modern resistors but he thinks it is worth it. I would spend money experimenting with vintage small signal tubes—many are much better than modern versions and last much longer. Vintage power tubes can be good too, but many are quite expensive, and because they don’t last as long, you get less value for the money. |
Yeah I’m pleasantly surprised and grateful the Hovlands have lasted this long and still sound so good. Tubes may cost more than caps, but much easier to swap for sure. For the longest time, I thought the Amperex’s warmth and sweetness was about as good as it gets for classical stringed instruments, pianos, sax/clarinets and vocals, but after acquiring some rebranded Mullard box plates CV4004 M8137 tubes, I’m blown away by how much of the mid and to lower body was the Amperex and especially the Telefunkens were missing. I doubt think even the copper foil PIO or PIW would make that dramatic of difference over the Hovlands. |
Have you ever considered a PL Dialogue preamp to mate with your amp? Previous generation, great deal maybe better if you can negotiate. primaluna dialogue premium preamplifier For Sale - US Audio Mart Based on you previous postings, you aren't running a preamp?
