What innovative, unconventional cartridge designs can you recommend?
An older design, and one cheaper than magnetic cartridges is the piezo-electric cartridges where the cantilever pushes against and bends material that emits electrons when bent.  Other cartridges had material who resistance changed with such stres...
Is the Leben CS600x unbeatable?
I totally agree about the Synthesis A100.  With a lot of systems, the smaller 40 watt A40 might do as well.  For the money, I cannot think of better integrated amps, and on top of that, a very good DAC is “thrown” into the bargain.
Maximum Cartridge Tracking Force for long LP Life
I know a number of people running Ortofon SPU and none complain of excess record wear.  The point where such damage occurs is well above the 3.5-4.0 range of these cartridges.
Maximum Cartridge Tracking Force for long LP Life
When records are played, the grooves are elastically deformed by the tremendous local force of the stylus.  The record groove then snaps back to its original shape after the stylus passes.  If too much force is applied such that limits to snapping...
??? What Do You Think??? Rogue Audio Pharaoh II Driving ProAc Response D2D Speakers
I like the ProAc D2D speaker.  Both the silk dome and the ribbon tweeter version sound good (a rare brand that successfully integrates ribbon tweeters and conventional dynamic drivers).  I haven't heard this speaker with solid state amps, much les...
I need (want, can afford) a tube tester, maybe other simple testing equipment Help me!!!
I’ve used the Orange tester and it too is extremely easy to use like the Amplitrex.  It does not test as wide a variety of tubes as the Amplitrex and it doesn’t test at full power which stress tests the tube.  But, it does weed out bad tubes and i...
'Album cover art' can affect my expectations negatively.
I like Wes Montgomery, but I must confess that my purchase of his album "Road Song" is mainly for the beautiful cover photograph. https://www.allmusic.com/album/road-song-mw0000653406
I need (want, can afford) a tube tester, maybe other simple testing equipment Help me!!!
I own an Amplitrex.  The best thing about it is how simple it is to use and how easy it is to get both a simple assessment (strong, wesk, bad) and specific measurements to compare with expected numbers.  If you are more advanced in your testing ne...
'Album cover art' can affect my expectations negatively.
I am steered toward both good and bad album art.  I bought a Hugh Masekela album whose music I did not particularly like because of the terrifically absurd album cover.   https://fontsinuse.com/uses/30238/hugh-masekela-hugh-masekelas-next-album-...
Stylus/cantilever stiff and noisy--WARNING!
A lot of rubber parts are sensitive to ozone exposure.  You would have to seal your cartridge in an air tight container to reduce exposure to this pollutant. There are cartridges that seem to be relatively immune to the suspension going bad from s...
Stylus/cantilever stiff and noisy--WARNING!
Suspension rubber getting hard with age IS an issue, but, I have not experienced nor heard of this problem being manifested by increased needle chatter.  It is usually heard in the signal itself--mis-tracking, buzzing, etc.   I suppose it doesn't...
Stylus/cantilever stiff and noisy--WARNING!
The chatter one hears from the playing of the record comes primarily from the record surface itself, not from the cartridge.  The stylus playing the groove deforms the groove which then snaps back to its original shape (elastic deformation).  It i...
Speaker height...should known better
You don't need math or theory--find the right tilt by trial and error.  It is NOT the case that all speakers are meant to be heard directly on the tweeter access.  Many are voiced differently, and in any case, any particular listener might prefer ...
Sometimes Hard to Drive Speakers are a Gimmick
You have anecdotal evidence for a conspiracy theory?  Wouldn’t it be definitive if someone bought the speaker and analyzed the crossover to confirm that this has been done?
Sometimes Hard to Drive Speakers are a Gimmick
I think designers are unconcerned because, as Dave and Troy said above, electronics capable of driving such speakers are common.  So designers simply add more and more networks to their crossover to "correct" for various things, like a frequency r...
