Take up drums at age 56?
Have at it, but, don't forget to protect your ears from excessively high sound levels.  I know a number of people who are drummers getting up in years and every one of them complains about hearing loss.
How do you know when tubes are done?
I have replacement sets of Western Electric 348a tubes (my stereo amp runs four of these at a time).  But, after many years of operation, two tubes started to go weak.  Although I have replacements, these tubes are so expensive, that I have, for n...
How do you know when tubes are done?
I agree that the best approach is to keep a new, or tested NOS, set of tubes to put into the amp for comparison purposes.  At some point, the tubes have to be changed, so it makes sense to buy the set now.  You could get "lucky" if the set you buy...
What a sad world we now live in.......
The last time I looked at data, the entire world sales (the dollar value) of recorded music is about 1/4 of what it was at the peak.  This is the case despite people buying and accessing much more music than ever before.  Theft through file sharin...
Do MC Cartridges Deteriorate over time
In theory, at least, the elastomers in the suspension can deteriorate over time, particularly if exposed to ozone and other such pollutants.  But, I've heard plenty of cartridges in the thirty year old range that sound fine and have not suffered f...
SUT or phono stage?
I generally like most of the SUT I've heard.  Stereophile's Art Dudley once said that he never met a SUT he didn't like, even when the particular model did not quite match the output of the cartridge or the source impedance of the cartridge.  I so...
SUT or phono stage?
I take it you have two phono  inputs into the McIntosh, one for MM and another for MC so that you can easily switch between the two using a selector. The McIntosh would be providing part of the gain and the equalization for both inputs, so the MM ...
SUT or phono stage?
I thought that the two cartridges have comparable outputs, so they can be switched without any need for more gain when using one instead of the other.  Why would you need an additional SUT or amplification stage?
What are important features in a listening chair
Low-back chairs will reduce reflections from the chair itself affecting the sound.  That, at least in theory, makes them preferable to chairs with headrests that stick out to the side.  But, in practice, I don't mind the sound when sitting in a co...
Looking for speakers for my 4W SET amp
I have not heard the The TU-8200.  I have heard the TU-8600 (300B amp) and it is a terrific amp for the money.  I am a fan of the 6L6 tube, so I would bet that the TU-8200 is a winner.  I hope you find something that it will drive to a satisfying ...
Looking for speakers for my 4W SET amp
Yes, Charney is great, and so is Voxativ, but, I think both qualify as "break the bank" (five figure systems).  For around $3,000 (new), Tekton Double Impacts and Rethm Bhaava are among the best high efficiency systems at less than crazy prices th...
Tube Amps Watts vs SS amp
I find it interesting that so many audiophiles, particularly those who favor high-powered amps, measure quality by how loud an amp will play.  For me, the measure is just the opposite--how soft can an amp play and still deliver satisfying sound.
Tube Amps Watts vs SS amp
I too have heard the claim that tube watts are subjectively more powerful than solid state watts, and I have sort of felt that way myself.  I actually think that good tube amps, coupled with appropriate speakers, sound much more lively and engagin...
Tube Amps Watts vs SS amp
If you are starting with the premise that you need 400 wpc, and you have a somewhat tight budget restriction, most tube amps are not good candidates.  I think that even ultra expensive high powered tube amps don't sound very good and would stick w...
Digital vs Vinyl: The winner is ??
dave_b,Thank you for the link.  For a short presentation, this was pretty good.  I agree with the comment that vinyl and digital differences in sound are a small part of the overall sound.  As for the paper--on digital tape vs. analogue tape--that...
