Most Realistic Recordings
For the Vivaldi concerti I listed, the conductor is Alfredo Bernardini and the group is L’Armonia L’Inventione.  I leant the CD to the people running the Audio Note room at the most recent Capital Audiofest; it was their go-to classical piece.
Output tube types - need some opinions
I don't think Tango is still made; a shame because they are reputed to be quite good.  A local dealer that also makes its own amplifiers likes Hammond for custom-made transformers (they will wind to your specifications).  I think he also likes Ele...

I have both the Belafonte Live at Carnegie Hall and the album where he returns to Carnegie Hall in original RCA recordings; the sound quality is terrific.  I have heard the audiophile reissue and it sounds great too, although I haven't had the opp...
Most Realistic Recordings
I should have added the following: Armstrong: "Satchmo Plays King Oliver" (Analogue Productions reissue) Macleod: "Come to Find" (original Audioquest LP release, CD--interesting comparison, the CD sounds fantastic, the LP sounds even more presen...
Output tube types - need some opinions
Depending on your power requirements, any pushpull from a 300B, 2a3 or 45 tube would be a worthwhile project (I particularly like the 45, but, it is very low in output).  Spend all that you reasonably can on the output transformers.  I like vintag...

A lot of good suggestions above.  I particularly like the copy of "For Duke" that I own, but there are other M&K Realtime recordings (direct to disc) that are also terrific sounding, such as "Fatha" (Earl Hines).   Most of my really good soun...
How much air does my preamp need?
There is not a single component in electronic gear that does not have a set of specifications on useful life that does not show decreasing life as a function of increasing temperature.  I personally would not gamble with running hot.  At a local ...
Question about speaker angle
Not only is the dispersion pattern important, but also the distance one sits to the speaker-another thing that the designer starts with a particular assumption that might not fit one's particular setup.  High frequency energy dissipates faster tha...
How important is spending time with your gear?
I am pretty much indifferent.  I would not mind at all if the gear were in another room (I would actually be glad if I had such an extra room, just for the sake of more room).  I don't care about the looks of the gear and don't need their presence...
klipshorn speakers
I presume the linestage portion of the 7300 would be used with the new amp, if that is the route your son would be going.  It is possible that the 602 is better than the power amplifier section of the 7300 such that there will be an improvement in...
klipshorn speakers
I heard a big Mac solid state amp feeding high efficiency speakers and it was a terrible sounding combination.  At any reasonable listening level the sound was lifeless and unengaging.  With high efficiency speakers you don't need much power, you ...
Question about speaker angle
Generally speaking, the more you toe-in speakers, the more solid and precise the center image will seem, but, this comes at the expense of a less expansive (wide) soundstage.  You need to experiment, that is the only way to know what is right for ...
Magnified Record Groove Photo
This picture doesn’t look real.  First, at this high a magnification, you would not see such obvious curvature of the grooves; what radius are we looking at, less than an inch?  The distance between the grooves is way more than I’ve seen in other ...
An Objective Review of the Tekton Double Impact Speakers
There isn't a single product on the market that is loved by everyone; some will love the Tekton speakers, others will not.  But, there are so many hate postings that are probably not based on actual listening experience because it is not easy to a...
finding the weak link
Do you like the sound you are getting?  Are there certain things you don't like as much and want improvement?  What have you heard out there that you tempt you in that direction?  There is no easy answer to where to go net in a system that appears...
