To All Cable Deniers, 1 Very Simple Question.
There are people coming into cable threads and saying all cables sound identical. So I have 1 question for y'all.
Today, it is about power cords.
The end-plug, the metal part, the one you plug into the wall outlet. Without knowing the % of copper in the plug of your basic cable, can you absolutely certain say it sounds identical to a plug with 98% copper?
How about 60% copper plug vs 98% copper? Identical?
40% copper, Identical?
20% copper, Identical?
0% copper, Identical?
To wrap up, the question is very simple. If the copper % is different, would the 2 plugs still sound the same?
A bonus question, if a plug is 60% gold, will it sound identical vs a 98% copper?

mitch2, there is a very simple method available to cancel, or to reduce, EMI field around power cable, which is a twisting (plenty twisted cables available) hot&cold wires once/twice per inch! if AC powered device is not designed properly to reject high freq. RFI, not enough chokes/caps/filters, then everyone can use ferrite core clamp on top of cable, the best is close to IEC plug, which rejects RF noise entering amp/pre/etc by 40..60dB +! plenty of different options available at low price: https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/f/fair-rite-products/snap-it-snap-clamp-on-ferrite-cores adding simple ferrite clamp can convert original power cable to awesome sounding, magic one! |

@westcoastaudiophile - While snap-on ferrite clamps can reduce radiated emissions and improve a cable's immunity to electromagnetic fields, manufacturers have found they can result in a "hardening" of the sound, reduced dynamics, and a loss of transparency over time. Ferrites can also increase inductance, resulting in a roll-off of high-frequencies. Most high-end cable manufacturers prefer to address noise through geometry and shielding. Plus, as already discussed by @faustuss, higher end audio equipment typically includes power supply filtering that significantly reduces noise. Other reasons ferrite clamps have limited suitability for high-end audio purposes are that they are most effective with higher-frequency noise in the radio frequency range (cell phones, Wi-Fi, and switching power supplies), but less effective at suppressing the low-frequency noise such as low-order harmonics (120 Hz, 180 Hz, etc.) and transformer hum (50/60 Hz) typical of linear power supplies. When used on power cords carrying significant current, ferrites can saturate, reducing their magnetic properties so that they are no longer effective on even high-frequency noise. I tried ferrites on power cords years ago when I first started making cables, and I didn't notice any improvement in my system. If ferrites were a "magic" solution, I suspect more cable manufacturers would use them. |
