used power amp under 1500

I started with a great system and I managed to downgrade it to an OK sound through a lot of trades, sales, questionable decisions and shrinking budget. (No regrets, it's been a fun journey.) I ended up with very low sensitivity, hard to drive speakers and now I need more power. Will 100 Watts be enough and is it OK and safe to buy used? Any brands that are a good value at $1500?

Elac’s Alchemy acquisistion, the $1700 DPA-2, is a contender.  This is an older model, so two used units might be within your budget.  210/325 wpc into 4/8 ohms, but when bridged, that rises to a nominal 625/420 wpc.

I used a pair of them for years until I was able to afford a T+A upgrade.  The T+A was a huge step up -- but it cost a DOZEN times the price.

My ELACs generally mated well with my 86db-sensitivity Harbeths.  But those speakers have a smooth high end, which worked well with the DPA-2’s moderate degree of Class D edginess.  Given the DPA-2’s proprietary NCore-based implementation, the problem is maybe a 3 or 4 out of 10 compared to other Class Ds in the price range.  Unfortunately, that was still enough to exaggerate the ugly sibilance distortion produced by the tonearm I was using at the time.  The problem was not nearly as noticeable with other sources.  And to put things into perspective, I still use my units to power surround and center channels of a home theater.

The ELACs are admittedly "entry-level audiophile", but at the price, it’s hard to beat their overall combination of power and SQ.  Reviews in the TAS/Stereophile.press are IMHO, a bit too enthusiastic, but overall worth considering.

@devinplombier the ARC DS225 is likely to be sonically superior to most of the options discussed here. Yes it’s a 15 year old class D amp made by Audio Research. Not sure if you skimmed thru some of the suggestions here.
In any case, this isn’t worth an argument since OP has been waffling and will most likely continue to do so for a foreseeable future.

Not to belabor the point, but here's the JVS review's bottom line in Sterophile:

Was I impressed?
I was. Replacing class-AB amps that cost many times more, surrounded by comparably high-end equipment, the ELAC Alchemy DPA-2 Switchable Stereo/Mono Power Amplifier delivered far more musical truth and pleasure than you might expect. Chief designer Peter Madnick has exceeded his goal "to provide the kind of real-life transparency and clarity that you would not expect at this price point, as well as an overall balance that would lead you to say, 'Wow, that thing's really good for the money.'" He may also have created a benchmark product for this price range—not that I've heard all the monoblocks that are available for under $3000/ pair. (There aren't that many.) But if there are many other equally fine amps at this price, budget-conscious audiophiles are living in a golden age. Enthusiastically recommended
