worth the repair?
I Just purchased a McIntosh MA 252 and connected it to my vintage Marantz 2270 and Tascam 200 CD. My speakers are B&W 603 s2.I turned it on and before playing a cd I head a loud crackle and one speaker went dead. I fear my connections are bad, need help from an expert. Question is, is it worth repairing the speakers with this setup? I always liked them, but maybe time to upgrade, like to B&W or Sonus Faber.Opinions? What do you think B&W would charge before I pay the cost of mailing.
@pharmacylaw - specifically, how did you connect your Marantz Receiver (used as a passive tuner) to your McIntosh (amp)? If connected incorrectly, component damage may result. An amplifier expects a small signal to amplify, so it’s very bad to connect it to another amplifier. Both Marantz and Mac have amplifiers, but the Marantz has a bypass connection (preamp out) that bypasses/skips the built in amplifier. Also, it’s best/safer to minimize both volumes before powering up |
I think you got hosed on the amp. You can switch speakers to confirm. edit: sorry this suggestion was already mentioned.

OP likely the issue is from a bad tube in the Mac amp. Tubes are often the culprit in 99% of issues like you experienced. The good news it that your speaker should be fine. However there is enough in your post to let us know that you need help before doing any more trouble shooting. Get someone that is experienced in hifi to visit and help you troubleshoot. |
