Bob Weir

I just discovered that Bob Weir has passed. I’m really getting old. It seems like yesterday that I was at a show watching Bob, Jerry and Phil mixing it up on stage.

Phil Lesh past in ‘24 and   Donna Jean Godchaux passed in late November ‘25.  The only ones left are the drummers, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart.

Sad

@curiousjim -

Hope this doesn’t sound to morose- I find it "curious" how many members of the GD and their staff have passed because of cancer or are afflicted with it. Is it a "cancer cluster"? Weir; Hunter had a brain tumor; Phil had prostate; Donna; Bill the drummer has skin cancer; Ram Rod had lung cancer; Rock Scully had lung cancer; TC has lung cancer.

@wharfy - It's a real shame, indeed; I think the fact that most of these people smoked like chimneys, and not just cannabis, for decades had some affect, too. There have been a number of folks from that generation that succumbed to smoking-related illnesses (not just musicians either; David Lynch died last year from that). Bill lives in Hawaii; skin cancers tend to be more common in tropical environs, I should think.

@wharfy

Morose? Maybe,  but all of them were rode hard and put away wet many many times! Jerry Garcia refused to take care of himself and was a ticking time bomb.  At least the others were just products of the times.  Bobby Wasn’t innocence, but he quit most of the hard stuff years and years ago and 78 pretty good run considering the lifestyle.

I remember seeing a TV special about Bob Weir at Sonic Studios [San Francisco, circa early 90s] working with a restoration engineer using the Sonic Solutions Digital Restoration System] , at declicking some old 78 rpm records, and was impressed that he took it upon himself to do that.
