Stereophile - Sabrina 5

Hate to rag on Sterophile again, but one of two things are true.  One, the Sabrina speakers they reviewed were wired incorrectly or Wilson is now shipping with inverted midranges.

All that work to reduce distortion to vanishing levels only to totally ahem, add custom flavor to the frequency response.

Honestly if I was reviewing this speaker I'd have stopped to reach out to them before publishing, just to be sure this speaker shipped as intended.

Yes, have a 60/60 sh60 danley, bought used. I’ve gotten to know some pro guys who tell me about these things....currently running it with a 21 inch tekton sub.

Read a lot about the SH50’s, which are/were quite popular in some circles that implemented pro gear in home environments, and your SH60’s fall into the same category, just a bit wider coverage pattern. Emulating, and effectively being a point source per channel with great dynamics, controlled dispersion and good extension (certainly upwards) is a real engineering feat.

I also have one of the Pioneer subs. It’s not some extension king, but, the ’quality’ of bass is high. I’ve been meaning to copy something along the lines of Pioneer and also what borresen did recently, diy a larger one.....It’s all sitting in a semi unfinished cabin/barn (sleep on the floor, whatever you wanna call it), no waf issues.

The horn-loaded Pioneer bass cabs no doubt sound great, but yeah, they’re made for being ultimately SPL beasts, so extension takes a hit. For most music though I take it they are more than fully sufficient, so I wouldn't worry that much about extension, unless with movies.

(I assume you are referring to these from the netherlands? will need to talk to someone there, thanks...https://stageaccompany.com/products/performer/performer.html)

It’s the right brand alright, but my speakers are the so-called Blue Box series of the older, fully refurbished variant, SA4525, with ferrite magnet planar magnetic driver (SA8525) where newer ones are neodymium (SA8535) and class A/B built-in amp (class D in the current iteration). The newer version is almost 70 pounds lighter.

Have you seen this Japanese guy’s channels, he has two of them, a lot of enthusiasts over there, it seems.

Yes I have, and I know a japanese guy, Nakaue, who has tons of EV and JBL cinema speakers which can be seen here

LOL, more wisdom from Audiogon's own speaker guru. This @erik_squires sprouts, regurgitates and flaunts himself across as the authority on loudspeaker design. Been at it for a while. Sad really. With over 17K posts, he could have spent more time studying and learning from true experts like Joe D'appolito, and Vance Dickerson. I have both those books which I can sell to you, but perhaps you should Start with David B Weems'   Designing, Building, and Testing Your Own Speaker System with Projects if I can find it. First publication was about 1980. It's very useful, Erik.

Depending on XO design particularly when using 2nd order XOs (12dB/oct Erik) and the physical spacing between the acoustic centers, the designer will invert phase electrically to be in phase acoustically, Erik. As has been mentioned in earlier posts here.

I do understand the fun you must be having, copy and pasting stuff off the net. Please don't overlook ChatGPT, very useful.

Oh, and Erik, did you not notice the speakers on spikes?  Now, I would have agreed with you had complained about that.

Criticizing someone's product like you did is very bad form, Erik.

Ad hominem attack without actual proof.  Where have I claimed to be a unique authority, or failed to accept a mistake in engineering?  Also, it's not "This Erik Squires" it's "THE Erik Squires."

Now who is trying really hard to sell themselves as an authority?  "I have books so I know stuff" is one step removed from ChatGPT.

If I said anything otherwise I'd have been mistaken.  I thought I made it clear that the mids appear to be misaligned, not in the wrong absolute polarity.  Maybe you read too fast.

By the way, I don't care if anyone actually likes these speakers or buys them.  Rather, that failing to fully integrate or equalize the drivers, while letting the impedance drop as low as it has are bold engineering choices.

Criticizing someone's product like you did is very bad form, Erik.

Your dehumanizing, factually incorrect puffery and condescending tone has really taught me a lesson in civility, @gournard , I'll be sure not to take your post as an example of how to maintain a civil dialogue, and probably won't take your advice on how to discuss golden cows either.  Instead I'll attempt to be civil and constructive as often as I can even when I disagree with other posters though I know I fall short of my own standards.

Best,

THE Erik  Squires

I don’t consider Wilson’s bright whatsoever. The older models yes the tweeter was hot but definitely not the new models. Does anyone have a comparison of the original Sabrina midrange/tweeter performance versus the Sabrina X? Just curious because I have the original.  From my understanding the original is warmer overall.

BTW, the original post by Erik was specifically, only the measurement section of the review, just to be clear. Enjoy!
