Many 'high end' speakers look like abominations....a smooth surface finish doesn't mean it ain't an abomination to look at.

It's just that when you start to spend a lot of money on speakers or any luxury item, no particular brand, cosmetics plays an important part in gratification. Boxes work fine for some applications. But other times, it might sell more or be nice if there were other shapes, especially in the 'hi-end' market. It's a blend between 'hi-end' and 'affordable', and naturally it'll have conflicts with the 'hi-end' market.
