Luxman preamp into Mark Levinson amp?

I'm thinking of trying a Luxman CL-38uC into a Mark Levinson No23.5 to drive Watt Puppies. Has anyone mated a Luxman tube pre with Mark Levinson or similar SS amps?

In that price range you might also consider the Spatial Audio Raven preamp — they offer a trial period.  Best of luck.

I think mixing tube pres with SS amps is, in general, a really wonderful sounding idea.

I am using a Luxman CL-38uC into a Nagra Classic amp.

Great combination

Thank you both. I'll look up info on both these amps to see how they compare to the ML for a sense of referrence.

The Mark Levinson No. 23.5 is a true voltage source. It successfully doubles power from 8Ohms to Ohms (400W). This is mandatory for the WATT/Puppy, which drops to 2.1Ohms at 80Hz. A weaker amplifier would suffer from current limiting or significant frequency response deviations in the mid-bass "thump" region.

But gain matching will be a headscratcher, as the amp only takes 1.41V to get to full tilt so you may run into gain clipping issues where you can’t get the Preamp volumee knob past 10 oclock on the dial

The Luxman can output 37V, but the Mark Levinson hits its maximum possible volume (clipping point) at only 1.41V.
