Any ladies in the audience?

I've always assumed that most of the posters here are female - did I get that wrong?

but seriously, I remember one lady who identified as. And then there was Kat, at Upscale, now gone across the Pond. And finally: Andrew Robinson's wife.

So yes, DeKay, the math almost adds up.

To answer the question, yes, but few and far between. There seems to be a greater amount in other forums such as Head-Fi. I’ve found that submissions from these female members always provided a different perspective which added depth to the forum discussions.

Maybe I’m too serious and not reading the room very well with the following:

My stance, if it’s not too obvious already: our hobby would benefit from a greater level engagement from the female population. About a decade ago the NFL began to make a concerted effort once they realized that they were ignoring half the population of the United States. If our hobby is slowly dying as some suspect, why wouldn’t we want to engage the female population? 

I think a good first start is looking at us in the mirror. The following was from a female Audiogon member (one of us):

I am a female audiophile. My reasons are the same as men's -- I love music, and a good system makes it so much more enjoyable and engaging.

As for why there are not more female audiophiles -- well, the attitudes expressed here have a lot to do with it. Women are hyper-aware of where they are welcome and where they are not. If they sense that it's a "boy's club" and that they are going to be made to feel uncomfortable, they are going to shy away. 

I attended an audio society meeting in my area for the first time a couple of years ago -- it was intimidating. I walked in as a new person, and the person signing me in asked me "who are you with?" It was assumed that I was the wife or girlfriend of someone who was already there. 

Most of the people there were very nice. But the "barriers to entry" are huge for most women, who do not want to be the unicorn, regarded as an oddity.

That said, I hope more women do get involved. Some of the comments here, full of stereotypes and assumptions, are an indication that too many audiophiles have not encountered any actual women in the context of their hobby, and it would be a healthy thing if they did!
 

Women generally hear better than men in my experience.  I wish more women would participate here.
