Next upgrade to an entry-level system?

Currently my system consists of:

  • AT-LP120 turntable (with the shibata stylus)
  • A-S301 integrated amp
  • RP-500M II speakers
  • RSL 10e subwoofer

Also I have been gradually collecting better quality vinyl, such as the BPO original source series. What would be the best thing to upgrade next?

Typically the best way to upgrade your system is speakers first. Then bring all of your other components up to that level to get the most out of those speakers. You cannot shop by price, you must shop through professional reviews and listening to each component, but ultimately it is often true that through diligent work you will end up with components around the same price since they re similarly constrained by subcomponent and manufacturing costs.

For speakers you want to take you time, audition many until a set tugs on you emotionally. You want emotional connection. You should also stretch as far as you can financially since this is the core component and effects everything you hear. From there on you want to get the best possible electrons to support the speakers. Assuming your components are analog then think 30% for speakers, 17% amp, 17% preamp, 17% phonostage, and 17% turntable... OK that is only 98%... it gets the point across.

I agree with other posters about upgrading the speakers next. There are quite a few well regarded speakers under 1K new. I followed a similar upgrade path and the new speakers helped reveal limitations with my other components.
The next step would be the amp. Rotel, Cambridge Audio and Rega have well reviewed integrated amps under 1K. There’s real savings in the used market if you feel comfortable buying 2nd hand.

Speakers, and quality stands.  From your question and screen name, I take it you are a classical music lover. Klipsch speakers sound signature is not what I prefer for classical music. If I were in your position I would search out FBM, USAM, and here for a pair of used ADS L1290/2, L730, L780/2, or L880/2.  Make sure they have original drivers and .75” tweeters. All these models have ample midbass power and smooth extended highs.  Great clarity with no glare.  These are not dull New England AR type speakers…they are European inspired and were built to last.  The crossovers used mostly film caps and air core inductors. Rubber surrounds. Soft fabric domes with “sticky” damping compound.
If any restoration is needed, Richard So does it best.
