Accuphase amplifier choice

Hello All,

I have decided to upgrade my Parasound A21 amplifier looking for a more refined sound. The following are the amplifiers that I have in my mind:

Accuphase A-48s
Accuphase P-4600
Coda No. 8 (meterless)
Coda 16.0 (meterless)

Currently I am leaning largely to Accuphase. My dealer says that the Class A 48s will sound better with my ProAc D48R. But I am worried that I will lose dynamics since the Accuphase is only 50W into 8 Ohms. But it doubles all the way into 1 ohm.

The P-4600 is a higher wattage amp and I think it should be able to drive the D48R with ease because it doubles down to 2 ohm load. So I am not concerned with it's ability to drive the ProAcs.

I do have some feedback on the P-4600 from another thread here and appreciate it. But now looking for some comparisons.

Has anyone compared/experienced the Accuphase Vs Coda amplifiers? Any feedback is appreciated.

Power chords - I initially had my Accuphase A-48S amplifier powered by an Ansuz P2 chord I previously used with my McIntosh MA12000. But like people have mentioned Accuphase doesn't recommend using other chords so tonight I decided to hook up my A48-S with the original factory chord and I now have my Innuos Pulsar powered by the Ansuz P2 and HOLY SMOKES the sound is unbelievable! I'm hearing things i never knew were in the recording- subtle nuances that were hidden have come to life, bigger sounstage,  notes seem to float with incredible resolution sustain, decay and speed. Definitely more weight behind the notes. Whatever is going on I really like it. I've been switching the chords back and forth and I'm not mistaken,  it's so much better! It's now 5:30am and I can't stop listening.  I was supposed to be in bed by midnight.

@milpai I have used the stock Accuphase power cord, which was of course used by the design team to bench test all the gear, and with it, I could sense no issues with the performance of either the P-4600 or P-7500. On deck I have/had and tested: a Furetech DPS4.1, Cardas Clear Beyond, Nordost Tyr 2, Nordost Frey 2, Shunyata NC, Triode Wire Lab Silver Statement, Kimber PK10 Ascent.

Being routinely guilty of self administering the "aftermarket must be better than stock" mind-virus, I went through all these cords and found that the only one which DID NO HARM was the Kimber PK10 Ascent. I have convinced myself it’s at least as good as the stock cable and decided to keep it. All the others CHANGED the sound from reference (with stock) in a way that was not always good. Accuphase knows 100% what they are doing and have massively engineered power supplies that need a vey basic thing: a solid low resistance, low inductance connection to the grid. No filters, no EMI shielding, no mega dielectrics, no turbo ferrite clamps, nothing. Just a pure low resistance unadulterated connection to the wall socket. They take care of ALL the junk by design and need NO "help" by aftermarket cables.

On the Accuphase C-2900 preamp I tried: Cardas, Audioquest NRG something, Kimber PK14 Ascent, and yes stock. In this case the impact all these cables made was profound and alarming. In the case of the Kimber PK14 it put the preamp in "sedative mode" and was ejected a few days later once I realized what was happening. I have been listening with the stock Accuphase PC and have zero issues with the performance. It sounds the way it was intended to by design and I really like it.

Power cords, in my experience, can and do make changes in the way the power supply behaves, and ultimately the way the component does. These changes either align with your goals or end up causing tension. This variable (changed power cable) is heavily dependent on the local power grid and so as always YMMV :) Good luck!

Well, peer pressure worked and I caved in.

So I got the stock power cord this AM and powered the amp ON for a good 4 hours. Then it was time to sit down and listen. I put on the Jim Hall Concertio SACD (DSF files) and began listening. Things sounded a bit different. But I had not listened to this album since 2022. So I played the entire album and the music sounded good, though not as much “clarity” as I wanted. So I put on Brooke Miller’s Familiar SACD that I listened last night. That is when I noticed that the sound signature definitely changed - it sounded a bit muffled. So after listening to about a minute or so, I decided to go back to the Cullen. After changing from stock power cord to the Cullen, I put on the Brooke Miller album. The music immediately went back to how it sounded last night.

Maybe the stock power cord was not completely “burned in”? I don’t know. But I am happy with the Cullen power cord. Note that this power cord was customized a couple of years ago, to replace the receptacles with Furutech ones, by the company that had taken over Cullen temporarily. Maybe that makes a difference?i think I am happy with the Cullen.

@milpai

Watch out, someone will chime in to point out..you gave up too soon on stock power cord…lol!  I will ping you once your amp is fully broken-in to share my thoughts on a power cord that complements Accuphase handsomely.

@milpai at this level it takes at least 24 hours for a power cable swap for system to settle.
