Accuphase amplifier choice

Hello All,

I have decided to upgrade my Parasound A21 amplifier looking for a more refined sound. The following are the amplifiers that I have in my mind:

Accuphase A-48s
Accuphase P-4600
Coda No. 8 (meterless)
Coda 16.0 (meterless)

Currently I am leaning largely to Accuphase. My dealer says that the Class A 48s will sound better with my ProAc D48R. But I am worried that I will lose dynamics since the Accuphase is only 50W into 8 Ohms. But it doubles all the way into 1 ohm.

The P-4600 is a higher wattage amp and I think it should be able to drive the D48R with ease because it doubles down to 2 ohm load. So I am not concerned with it's ability to drive the ProAcs.

I do have some feedback on the P-4600 from another thread here and appreciate it. But now looking for some comparisons.

Has anyone compared/experienced the Accuphase Vs Coda amplifiers? Any feedback is appreciated.

Congrats, @milpai

As I mentioned to you earlier, give your A48S at least 100 hours, preferably more, before making any comparisons or conclusions. As Lalit says, the gap between your Parasound and A48 will widen dramatically. That I have no doubt about.

Fair warning though ... once you get addicted to the natural and sumptuous sound of Accuphase, there's no going back. Have fun and try to get some sleep as hard it it might be :)

@arafiq Thanks for the Govee floor lamp suggestion. I picked one up- was going to get the same floor lights 2 you have, but then I saw the uplighter bouncing light off the ceiling so I had to get that one. cheeky I may get more.

@mclinnguy

Hey, wait a minute... what happended? surprise I musta missed a post....

LOL...yes, I went with what my dealer originally recommended to me. While I was little worried initially with the spec of the A-48S and my existing amp, I also was bothered on the back of mind that my dealer never guided me wrong. He knows my listening preference, my other components and my room. And then a few members (@lalitk & @arafiq with whom I have been communicating for the past so many years discussed in details on a call about the amps.

Eventually I found that a Accuphase Class A integrated with just 30Watts, could drive a ProAc K10. And then I came upon the A-48S driving a big Magico. That cemented my decision that all these guys cannot be wrong.

So, yes we do own quite some pieces of gear that are similar. But I see that you already have 2 Coda Class A amplifiers. I have not compared a Accuphase Vs Coda and hence I have no recommendation. As far as the "variable" out on the DAC is concerned, I would like to stay between 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock position on the volume control on the Rhumba. I have yet to play with the Accuphase gains, before I settle down permanently.

@lalitk

Thank You.

I would recommend allowing this amp to settle in for atleast 250 hours and you will realize the difference between the A21 and A-48S is far from subtle.

I think this needs a bit of clarification. Even within the first 80 minutes, I was grinning a bit when I was listening to the Accuphase. And that classical tune - that definitely reminded me of why you love this amp. On that particular piece, I was stunned, because it made me "listen" to the piece rather than "hear" it. The sound stage was slightly wider, but the "wholeness" of the orchestra was something I had not experienced before. This amp , sort of, highlights the background information that I was "not paying attention to" before. Mind you - I did not say "missing" - probably it was there with the Parasound. But this amp made me pay attention. The fact that it made me listen to a "classical" piece with this much attention makes it a winner in my books. Any amp can make me enjoy the Nils Lofgren Dire Straits, etc. I will try a few Living Stereo/Voice SACDs later and see if I don't get distracted.

But thank you for talking me into this amp. I am going to take my own sweet time to listen to this amp and not rush to burn it in.

@arafiq

Thank You

I just now responded to @lalitk that the difference is not subtle when I made that statement. But that the same time the sound difference is not 5X of what you would expect between the Parasound and the Accuphase. I was really happy with the Parasound. But I wanted to experience the "upper end" of hifi and now was a good time.

You are right - I was up until 1:00AM last night and that was when I was texting you. Thanks for sharing your experience and enthusiasm about this amp.
