You might get some better feedback from users who actually have your mystery speakers in room. 

It depends on the room. Also, bass traps and room treatment can be used to alter the dynamics. 

Sidewall treatments, ceiling height, can help minimize the needed distance.

You can adjust toe angle to minimize reflections but need distance from the front wall to tune for bass reinforcement.  If you can bring them out say 3 feet to the rear baffle that could also work.

What would help greatly is if they came with port plugs which allow closer to wall positions. 

Trying to make the speakers fit into a smaller space is hobbling the speaker. This is potentially a $20k solution and folks are suggesting shoehorning and compromise.
