How much tariff if buying $10k from Japan?

Dear all,

This is November 2025, I’m about to execute a $10k brand new item from Japan and was curious how much everyone had paid from what amount and what month, year. Thanks

nasaman

I recently (10/02/2025) purchased a Luxman L-509Z direct from Japan for $7000 which included tax. Tariffs to California were $1000. I was a little shocked and didn’t expect that much.

The unit sells for $16K here with tax so I was still happy with the purchase.

@abnerjack  When anything is coming from another country, it generally needs a "customs broker" to file the paperwork, collect and remit the taxes and fees etc. I would expect the additional money FedEx is collecting from you is to cover their services in this regard.  They do nothing for free.  Cheers.

@nasaman   If you are importing from Japan, the "baseline" tariff is 15%.  There is a secondary tariff on steel & aluminum that can add an additional 25% on the value of those products used in the item you are purchasing.  With any luck you get off with 15%, but be prepared to pay more.  Can the same item be purchased from a US retailer?  Someone who could help you with warranty and service.  Just a thought.  Cheers.

Hi @cdhumiston, on top of that, ebay charges 8.5% tax.

Can I ask how long did it actually take from the date you executed?

Enjoy your Luxman. Me, Accuphase
