@cdhumiston, i just finished listening to the black and blue box set as well. i hadn't listened to the original for years--some critic described it as "mostly song-free", which (other than "hand of fate") is true enough, but i dig it--it's looser and less self-important than the better-regarded let it bleed or sticky fingers. the jams on disc 2 are fairly generic, but sorta hypnotic.

i've also been listening alot to hole's "live through this"--i don't usually like this kind of angry raw screamo thing, but this really is a masterpiece. it's long been rumored that kurt wrote the songs, and it's hard to believe he didn't have some input, but the sensibility is all hers. "softer softest", "rock star".
