Adcom, blast from the past.... I serviced my old Adcoms and moved them to my Home theater... - GFA 585, GFA 5503. I am running two tube amps now in monoblock mode - McIntosh Mc275s... I went from Martin Logan electrostats with a separate sub-woofer to just Tower speakers. In my case, Wilson W/P 8. A subwoofer was not needed anymore. So, in my opinion, if you want to get rid of your sub woofer, look for tower speakers with two woofers that are at least 8 inches, ie. minimum 2 woofers, a mid, and a tweeter. Note: your Canton ergo 80 are towers with two woofers and with a similar configuration I articulated, so, they should have been putting out some good bass. So, I am not convinced that modern towers would produce enough bass for you. You may not be able to get rid of your sub-woofer unless you go with big expensive tower speakers with more than 2 woofers.
Needing to replace thirty year old speakers.
I have a thirty year old pair of Canton ergo 80 speakers. I
never felt they were that good. My current system includes
a Chronus magnum dark integrated amplifier, a Cambridge
audio can v2 streamer and two Svs 2000 pro subs. The
Chronic dark replaced an Adcom 555-2 amplifier and an
Adcom 565 preamplifier. I always thought the Adcom
equipment sounded harsh in the upper midrange. The
Chronic solved that problem. It is better than the Adcom
equipment in every way. I like speakers that are slightly
warm sounding but still give detail. My budget is around
$5,000, maybe a little more. What speakers would sound
good with my setup? If a recommended speaker allowed
Me to delete the subs, my wife would be happy 😊

https://atc.audio/hi-fi/loudspeakers/entry-series/scm40/ New 8K. Used $5,500-6K. Used pair on Ebay. Subs not needed, Gaia footers strongly recommended. Rogue will drive these. Sealed design gives great control of bass/midbass. Midrange to die for, not aggressive. Owned the active version, traded up to ATC 50A, different animal for a whole lot more shekels. Speaker is chameleon with upstream upgrades. They will tell you, and reflect changes. Some claim a brightness with ATC. They only reflect what is wrong upstream. Once dialed in they are quite dynamic and engaging. Good hunting. |
