REL Classic 99 Sub

I am seeking opinion from those who have stepped up from REL S or T series subs to Classic 99 subwoofer. Did you hear an improvement or was it a step backwards?

I currently own a pair of REL Carbon Limited’s which are rated at 500W. The only negative thing about CL’s is the black piano finish. I do not care for piano black finish. A pair of Classic 99’s in my dedicated acoustically treated room would replace the CL’s. The room dimensions are ~ 15’ D x 30’ W x 8’ H.

There is something about Classic 99 understated vintage vibe. I am naturally drawn to high quality wood finishes. it’s like a fine furniture that is timeless and last you a lifetime …thinking about retirement and end game system.

I am not interested in any other brand recommendations or REL vs other brands including DIY for cheap debates. To my ears, REL’s offers the most accurate bass extension and easy integration with main speakers.

@lalitk  You may have already heard a hint of this yourself.

When we had the big British veneered down firing Studio III in my wood floored room the consensus was the presentation, using the noticeably improved low level Velodyne DD equalized signal offered slightly more definition with the cabinet on its side with the two tens firing forward.

Unfortunately, our improvement expectations of the manufacturers claimed -6dB@9Hz! frequency response were dashed by the in room measurements that showed the dramatic -6dB roll off nearer the lower 30Hz region regardless of its room location or its position.

In any event it appears you're in for a personally more desirable overall presentation and appearance. All the best with it.

I can completely see how the side-firing configuration could bring more definition in a lively wood-floored room. I’ve always found RELs (owned few different REL’s, last one was Carbon Special) to be quite room-dependent when it comes to ultimate extension versus articulation. While I’m under no illusion about hitting 9Hz flat (those specs always read a bit optimistic), what I’m hearing now feels more about musical integration than sheer depth. The Classic 99s, with their wood veneer and slightly more effortless presence, just seem to complement my system beautifully — both sonically and visually :-)

PS: 99’s did pass my ultimate test track with flying colors - Why So Serious? - The Dark Knight.

Update:  Installed custom walnut 3” platforms with spikes beneath my classic REL 99s. The bass response became noticeably tighter and more controlled. Great addition!

Are you only using the subs for music?

I have a stereo amp and a HT receiver in the same room, and on paper it seems with Classic 99 I should be able to connect my amp via a Speakon cable for music- and my receiver via an LFE cable for movies.

Just wondering how well it all actually works in real life, not on paper!

Yes, I’m using the subs strictly for music. The Classic 99 does allow for both connections — Speakon for the stereo amp and LFE for the home theater receiver — and it works just as described. The integration should be seamless as long as levels and crossover points are properly set.
