REL Classic 99 Sub

I can completely see how the side-firing configuration could bring more definition in a lively wood-floored room. I’ve always found RELs (owned few different REL’s, last one was Carbon Special) to be quite room-dependent when it comes to ultimate extension versus articulation. While I’m under no illusion about hitting 9Hz flat (those specs always read a bit optimistic), what I’m hearing now feels more about musical integration than sheer depth. The Classic 99s, with their wood veneer and slightly more effortless presence, just seem to complement my system beautifully — both sonically and visually :-)

PS: 99’s did pass my ultimate test track with flying colors - Why So Serious? - The Dark Knight. 

Update:  Installed custom walnut 3” platforms with spikes beneath my classic REL 99s. The bass response became noticeably tighter and more controlled. Great addition! 

Are you only using the subs for music?

I have a stereo amp and a HT receiver in the same room, and on paper it seems with Classic 99 I should be able to connect my amp via a Speakon cable for music- and my receiver via an LFE cable for movies.

Just wondering how well it all actually works in real life, not on paper!

Yes, I’m using the subs strictly for music. The Classic 99 does allow for both connections — Speakon for the stereo amp and LFE for the home theater receiver — and it works just as described. The integration should be seamless as long as levels and crossover points are properly set.
