Every time I read some music magazine's list of "best drummers", I have to laugh at the usual, cliche choices, when guys like DeJohnette exist, or have existed,
Very sad. As a drummer I like Keith JarrettAt the Blue Note - The Complete Recordings (it’s on Qobuz) for the music but also because it’s an excellent ECM recording where DeJohnette’s drums are recorded naturally and don’t pan all the way across the stage the way drums are often and unrealistically portrayed. On songs like “Bop-Be (Live)” and “Now’s the Time” you get a real “the kit is in my room” kinda feel, especially with the solos toward the end of the songs, more than almost any other recording I can think of because DeJohnette’s drums are so realistically captured in their natural space. Anyway, a huge loss for the music world for sure.
