DAC upgrade

Looking to take my digital side of things to the next level.

L-shaped new room. Sloped ceiling. Big space.

D’Agostino HD Preamp, M400 amps, Aurender W20 with their Master Clock. Wislson Benesch Resolutions with two REL 32 subs. Great interconnects.

Have a Chord DAVE DAC. It sounds good. Still a little clinical and sterile. Haven’t gone into the world of tubes. I’m an amateur for sure but read a lot of what you all say and am trying to elevate my game. Truly enjoy this hobby and the happiness that music brings. Just learning what the next step might be.

Thank you for your input.

When using Valves, a particular selection of Valve put to service, can in some cases, create an impression the End Sound has a Sound Stage that seemingly fills the space within the Room.

For this reason only I suggest Valves, as you have stated "Big Space".

I am familiar with both Valve DAC’s and SS and even though prefer the Valve used in the circuit of a DAC, when it is without doubt having been the ideal selection for a Valve, remain to find it difficult to prejudice against certain SS DAC Models when heard as standalone demo’s or during SS vs Valve Demo’s. Very good impression is on offer from both circuit types.

It really is important to invest time into doing footwork and create ’sat in front of’ experiences. Only then will description supplied by others start to make any useful sense.

The Thread in the Link directs to a reasonable discussion had on a selection of DAC's that are costing up to $3K, this might be a worthwhile read if this is where the Budget is constrained to.

If moving towards $5K I have a another DAC I introduce.

For the Record, I use a PS Audio PWT Mk II and a Bespoke produced Valve DAC.

Berkeley Alpha Reference 3 would be my recommendation. It is detailed, lifelike and natural. i’d recommend an Audio Research DAC9 but it is getting a bit long in the tooth, and doesn’t have DSD. I find dCS to be too sterile.
