Just bought a used pair of KEF Reference 3 floorstanders in your price range. Wonderful speakers replacing my R11’s. True Hifi speakers. 110 pounds though. Had a couple younger neighbors bring them into my house and up the stairs. Gave them each a bottle of macallan for their help. Relatively easy to move when up there. I am 73. Highly recommended.
Have the itch yet again. $5-6k budget for floorstanders.
Well I've owned around 20 floorstanders over the last 30 years. Ridiculous I know but for me that's the hobby: trying new gear every 1-2 years. Anyhoots currently have Zu DW6 Superfly in my main rig, Wharfedale Evo 4.4 in the small TV room. Have both tube & SS amps I rotate. Yesterday I sold my SVS Ultra Tower (the prior version) ergo gots me thinking, so fun to go shopping, no? I listen to mostly jazz, on vinyl & via Qobuz. Some beats also (downtempo/chill). I used to rock out but nevermore. Prefer to stay under 100lbs; not getting any younger. I do have a SVS sub the SB 2000 pro btw.
Here's my short list:
- SVS Ultra Titan
- MOFI 888
- Dali Opticon 8
- Cornwall IV (rich buddy downsizing)
- Goldenear T66 (owned the orig Triton One way back 2013, dug them, had to downsize for a move)
- Dyn C2 (wildcard, never heard em, wish I could audition)
Anyhoots, who wants to chime in?

BREAKING NEWS Just returned from Hifi Sound in Minneapolis where I returned solely to listen to their Cornwall IV. Never heard them prior to today. After an hour I placed my order! In Black Oak (Arkansas, ha). Ergo they'll be shipped there, then delivered to the manse, hopefully soon. Whilst listening today I felt I've been chasing this particular sound most of my life. The closest I've come is via Zu (I am zufan for a reason, have owned Druid & my current DW6) & also the Sanders Electrostats. The ultra lively immediacy of the Cornwall is what I go for. Will have to update in the review section after a few weeks of breaking in. I've seen a crazy amount of live shows. Even one last night at a jazz club Crooners. These Cornwall sound 'live' to me. Incidentally my 1st 'real' set of speakers were Heresy, bought in 1988 whilst in college. They were $600 in unfinished birch; which I later stained cherry. They are still kicking; my younger & poorer buddy I gave as a gift, he digs them mucho. Talk about full circle! They even look similar. ps the gear was Trilogy amp & pre. Cambridge streamer. Cables were Nordost (I think). |
