Does it ever end?

I found the search to be more or less continuous for the first few years. I then adopted the strategy of reaching as far as I could financially... and assembling the very best, synergistic system I could afford... typically taking two years. First components, then interconnects, then vibration control. Then my focus would drift to music and I would enjoy it for around seven years until again, I would start getting anxious. My rule is 2x investment as a minimum. So in the seven years or so my financial status had improved so I could double my investment. I would also be exhausted from the hundreds of hours of research, breaking, and decision making that went into the upgrade. 

Well that has worked for me, for the better part of 50 years... keeping any yearning out of the picture for most of the time. 

It’s healthy to exercise  that natural human instinct to explore.

It ended for me.  The only component I bought in the last few years is a Wiim Streamer because I wanted to add a cheap streamer to my basement surround system.  I have been very happy with my main system as is.

Its also interesting no mentions of spousal restraints.  I think I might go on experimenting for years if not for my wife's more conservative approach to spending.  I do think the internet has fueled much of my exploration.  Prior to my current set up I lived for at least 20 years with an old Rega Brio integrated amp and Spendor SP-1's.  But bottom line, you only live once and you certainly can't take it with you when you go.

I agree with @ghdprentice   Go big or go home. Do it right the first time (Or at least for a longer term)  I just went through this just as he describes. My last few touches were power cords and vibration control. (Before that it was cabling) All of this after I got the components I could afford that make me happy. Good luck!
