There is an ongoing vinyl vs. digital war . . but only one side is fighting it! Why is it that vinyl enthusiasts feel so compelled to attempt justify their esthetic preferences? I don't see digital users starting similar threads.
It Can't Be Explained Better
I just read this latest post from Dave Chesky at Audiophile Society, and I must share it, as nothing I've read has better explained the phenomenon that may be behind the preference for vinyl playback so many of us have...

If you want to understand the truth ounce in what Chesky said it is way over digital versus analog ... This debate miss the core of acoustic experience because it makes us focus on what music is not : a wave or a signal. If you understand his description and metaphor as merely an opposition to digital by an analog afficionado only you will miss the truth of what he said which refer back to deep acoustics meaning explained here ( i own this book which is stunning material) :
This quote from Chesky is explained in this article :
We cannot understand, speech, music, sound without informing ourselves about acoustics... If not we will stay passsive consumers buying gear pieces by "tastes" for them (subjectivist) or worst buying them because ASR limited set of measures said so (objectivists) ... Then if the music is not the signal but way more (digital or analog) if it is not the analog wave either but way more (sorry Chesky) what is it ? Read this article ... Acoustics rules audio engineering not the reverse... |
That’s a very odd statement to make. I refer you to my post above. As I said vinyl and streaming both have their pros and cons. Discussing the sound of vinyl is in no way denigrating streaming. Yet every time anyone raises this subject, the anti-vinyl crowd bomb the thread waging the very war you are accusing them of fighting. |
