Thiel Owners

Guys-

I just scored a sweet pair of CS 2.4SE loudspeakers. Anyone else currently or previously owned this model?
Owners of the CS 2.4 or CS 2.7 are free to chime in as well. Thiel are excellent w/ both tubed or solid-state gear!

Keep me posted & Happy Listening!

Thank You for your dedication and hard work on upgrading the CS 2.4 loudspeaker's XO network.  Happy New Year's Eve.
tomthielGood to see you today. Yes, I hope that you see a return on your amps as well. Reading the other sites, the Classe' brand is loved, represented and is in need of customer service.  Happy New Year's Eve.
popsGood to see you. Have any of you Classe' guys heard the Omega series? Those were some serious looking fire-power.  Happy Listening!

Excellent discussion -All.
5000 posts and going stronger than ever. Way to Go Panel!

Thank You for posting such a concise and well-written follow up on the advantages of a dedicated line , AC purifier and their advantages with Classe' amplifiers. I concur with your assessment on newer technologies and the devices that utilize an incredible amount of high amplitude bandwidth/wideband noise that did not exist in a pre-internet age.
It would be interesting to learn more on the next generation of digital pioneers that will address and tackle this issue head-on. Equally important,  will said pioneers build and implement the next great grid?
What can the general public expect from such a development?
What will it look like in presentation? Interaction? Stability?

My pleasure. Thank You for seeing a way to make an excellent loudspeaker- Outstanding! You guys here that are on the D.I.Y side are performing an incredible service for many owners. Very cool and sharp minds. I believe in modifications and the modders that make it happen.

interesting query and percentage factors for the Panel to ponder.
Room acoustics may be the most adjustable factor as some of you guys have a naturally great -sounding space (low percentage). While others, have an inherently unforgiving acoustical space (higher percentage).
The same train of thought can be applied to dealers/retailers. IME, I must give props to The Listening Room in Baltimore MD. The retail space had excellent sounding rooms without any additional acoustical treatments (all rooms were contractor carpeted).

I had no idea that Don was a Thiel dealer/retailer at one time. Can you recall his electronics that drove those 3.5 loudspeakers? Very cool story and small world indeed.  I was there around 5 years ago and at that time he had Maggies and Sonus Faber.

Thank You for chiming in on rosami 's query. For you guys that are running tubed gear, are you noticing a shorter life span of those tubes?

Good to see you today. I am sad that Mr. Hoatson passed. He was a unique character that believed in entry level cables/power cords only. During my visits we discussed this matter at length. Still, his rooms did sound great- no question about it. Equally important, he has a family member to carry his Audio business forward. Here is to Michael becoming successful on the Eastern Shore. Thank You for the update.

Much Thanks for sharing your 3.5 purchasing experiencing. During my auditions Don represented Audio Research, Cambridge Audio, Rega and Rogue Audio. Maggies and Sonus Faber were the loudspeaker lines. Straight Wire cables/power cords entry level, low-tier only. I recall that we talked about his Engineering Degree. I do not believe that he divulged his discipline? I enjoyed his passion for electronics and musical selections.

Good to see you again. Thank You for citing those slot dimensions and measurements. I do not believe that we have many CS 1.6 nor CS 1.7 owners on the Panel.

Thank You for the follow up and clarification on Don's engineering discipline.  Nice score! on those CS 1.6 loudspeakers. You do indeed have a Hot Rod garage. Have fun!

Thinking outside of the box- I like it.  Perhaps wire upgrade could become an option once Beetle and Tom have an implemented and tested XO available for purchase.  These guys are the experts.

All-
I wanted to take a moment and give my gratitude and shout-out to one of our contributors. This gentleman took time out of his schedule to offer  an audition with a very sweet Pass Labs X-150.8 power amp.
As you guys know, this is one brand on my short-list to demo. Last year I spent some time trying to procure and purchase my long standing Reference amp (Conrad Johnson Premier 350). Over the years this is the one amp that I spent a considerable amount of listening time. Yes it has a little age on its design and topology. In contrast, the Pass Labs is a current design and topology. Fantastic power and current delivery to the CS 2.4 loudspeaker. I detected zero congestion nor distortion during the session. Now comes the next piece of the puzzle. Which pre-amp to complement this power amp? Tubed or Solid state for best outcome?
I am familiar with Aesthetix, ARC and Conrad Johnson on the tubey side.
I have auditioned the Pass Labs XP-10 model only with a Threshold amp.
I know we have a few Pass Labs experts here- the floor is yours for suggestions. Thank You- pwhinson for your hospitality and very fine system.

Thank You for your diligent hard work on the XO project. Good to read that Mr. Rob Gillum is of service to you as you guys figure out a working prototype. Do you have a Hot Rod garage like Tom?

Happy Listening!
A few descriptors of the X-150.8 sound. Excellent bass, clarity, detail and midrange from bottom to top, top to bottom. This amp delivered effortless power and current- no clipping appreciated. A touch to the warm side of neutral ( a very nice characteristic). Pass Labs is not anemic, dry nor thin in presentation/sound.

Thank You for sharing your perspectives and thoughts on internal wiring as it pertains to loudspeaker building. Cabling, industrial internal or OEM, is imperative to an excellent sounding system. This is my second passion, music being the first. Any cable discussion is warranted and welcomed.  Happy Listening!

Thank You for a little cost-analysis of the upgraded Cardas binding posts/wiring. I am interesting in learning the prices that you and Tom have discovered on the Clarity SA caps or better, Dueland caps and Path resistors. Take your time developing those beta-boards. A delay or two along the way is to be continued, expected. All of this is a process that has to work through on your timetable.

Thank You for your assessment of the XP-10. Which ARC pre-amp did you purchase?   Happy Listening!

Thank You for the update. There are many here that enjoy Music servers and streaming via ROON. Good to read that your speakers are settling into your room/space.

Thank You- Gary. The ARC Ref 3 is still very popular among Audiophiles and a steal at current market value.  Happy Listening!

my nut for the mis-interpretation of root word wire. Agreed, a straight wire does indeed exhibit behaviors beyond resistance, capacitance and inductance.  Thank You for the connection between StraightWire and Thiel Audio. Those guys were early adopters like M.I.T. and Transparent Audio (not counting Monster Cable brand) for aftermarket applications. Very interesting.

oblgnyGood to see you this New Year. I know that you are a Pass Labs guy and once had a B.A.T./Pass Labs combo.  Hope you are well and geared up for more Audio adventures.  Happy Listening!

how is the PS Audio gear settling into your system?  Hope you are well this New Year and playing good music today.

All-
I have a colleague and friend that is looking for a pair of CS 2.7 or CS 3.7 loudspeakers.  If any of you guys have a line, other than the usual secondary marketplaces, please post here / send a PM to me.Thank You.
Happy Listening!
tomthielThank You for your continued wire talk and its application within our loudspeakers. Fascinating insider discoveries and evaluations by you DIY guys.  The late Mr. Don Hoatson was an endorser of the Straight Wire brand. I wonder if he ever carried other cabling brand(s) in his operation?
Does Mr. Rob Gillum use Straight Wire to repair, re-wire cross-overs, drivers,  at CSS?

Happy Listening!
beetlemaniaPutting a smile on our faces is what it is all about my friend. As soon as Tom and You have finished products, I want to visit and hear the outstanding improvements. No rush- enjoy this hobby and the Music!
Happy Listening!
beetlemaniaI recall that you own #163/164 speakers. I own #177/178 speakers. It would be interesting to learn if all of these individual loudspeakers were built and shipped in one lot? Or, were they built and released in smaller lots by a certain number within each lot? Much Thanks for identifying the country of origin for Clarity Caps, Erse Coils, Jantzen, Mills Resistors.
Where are Mundorf, Dueland and Path sourced?
Andy, Holco, Tom and You,  have certainly accomplished your homework on this project. Have fun you guys.

I believe that one of the Panel members reached out to Rob Gillum regarding those filters? The answer was not to change any of the OEM parts.

Your hearing is still healthy as the CS 2.7 is not harsh in presentation nor sound. Hope you are well this early Summer evening.

I did ask desmond888 to join us here once he has established a finished product. Beetle has posted the link to his particular thread as above. Thank You Beetle- I know that you guys have been talking back and forth. Exciting times indeed.

tomthielLooking forward in reading more about your observations as well as Beetle's configurations. Over the years, reading across multiple Audio forums, I have read about the right phase angles. In the models CS 2.4, 2.7 and 3.7, the first right phase angle occurs at 200 Hz. A second right phase angle occurs at 100 Hz. Have you guys (Andy, Beetle, Holco or Tom) found this problematic for your personal system power amps to drive? As I understand it, this is correlated in drops between 4 Ohms down to 2 Ohms across much of the speakers' frequencies. 3 Ohm nominal.
This is one indication as to the value of using a 2 Ohm stable power amp to (hopefully) prevent clipping and distortion within the mid-bass/mid-range regions.  Thus, reducing damage to crossover and driver.

Happy Listening!
beetlemaniaThank You for reporting on your Ayre AX-5. I poised the query to address integrated amps, as well as, separates. The notion was in the back of my mind last week during my time spent with the Pass Labs (very robust for a 150w into 8 Ohms) power amp. We all know that some manufacturers do not list 2 Ohm specs. Surely,  those great designers behind Audio Research, Ayre, Conrad Johnson, Parasound and Pass Labs,  test those loads on the bench.
