Cincinnati, OH, any audiophiles?

Any Cincinnati, OH -based audiophiles on this forum? I have found only one truly high end dealer here, and they are leaning more and more towards high end home theater so they tend to be quite busye, and no longer set up truly "reference" systems one can listen to for calibration. Would love to get into touch with other fellow maniacs in the area Hard to know what else you "need" unless you can hear it and covet it in someone else's set up!

Would there be anyone interested having the next audio meet here at my store? That is if anyone is interested in driving from cinci to dayton oh? I have a few things that I've recently brought in from Sim Audio and Shunyata (Still on there way) that would be good to see what everyone is thinking on the new product! -Andres
Hello Yes if you have it Mon-thurs and play anaolg {Turn table} digital sucks and not for serious listening you might as well be Best buy if you demo it on digital.

Harvey
Wow! Lol. Well its not a problem at all to play records!!! What albums would you bring?
Oh Harvey ; Yes I love analog but not all digital " Sucks " a few of us have very high end digital CDP 's or computer based systems that are right at the cutting edge of what is possible in digital. Yes I like analog and some of us also have some very high end analog systems and some have both digital and analog , but what we all have in common is a love of music analog or digital . There is a place for both and the state of computer based digital is moving very fast. We are lucky here in Cincinnati to have 2 people who are advancing the state of the art in computer digital playback with Larry Moore of Ultra Fi and Gordon of Wavelenght Audio the DAC'S from both these people are different but both are light years ahead of what was possible just a year ago I would say call Larry of Ultra Fi to find out what is possible with digital today it has come a long way maybe not as good as a state of the art analog system but very musical . The ability to to jump to any song with remote control makes it easy to rediscover old music and maybe just maybe listen to more music . After all music is what we are all in this hobby for and some music will never be on records and some will never be in a digital format we need both formats , music is life. Marc
Andres,

I think it would be great to have a gathering at your store. I've
never been there and it doesn't seem to be very well known by the
audiophiles I know in Cincinnati. However, I have heard GREAT things
about your store. From what I've heard you carry GREAT product
(including some very serious digital gear) and I hear that your
service is exceptional. If you decide to host a gathering, let us know
and we'll extend the invitation out to our local e-mail list in
addition to your posting on the Audiogon-Cincinnati Club Forum.

BTW, did I send you an e-mail last year inquiring about having you
host a gathering at your store? If not, I intended to, but may have
forgotten about it......

Enjoy,

TIC
I would be very interested in coming to your store and hearing some of your gear. As for the analog vs. digital discussion,I personally prefer LPs to silver discs but also enjoy digital for it's incredible variety of performers/groups that were not able to get that LP contract back in the day. Also this has nothing to do with the original invite for a get together. Do we need to bring drinks?

e
hell yes. name the time. i like all of it. i would very much like to hear some sim.

I'm glad everyone is up for the meeting here! What would be some products that I could have pre-set up for everyone? Lets say we reserve 2 rooms with a couple of different set ups. I have the new Sonus Faber Liutos (They havn't been reviewed yet so I figured we could do a PRE-Review before we start to see them in any magazines) I also have the Thiel CS3.7's (Which I'm interested in selling my demo models if anyone is interested) and I have the Monitor Audio PL100's as far as amazing bookshelf speakers goes. Could I get some suggestions on what we should have set up? I'm up for whatever! Oh and yes, I have the new Perspex Turntable from Pro-ject. It's quite stunning to look at and with the Blackbird it does wonders! This way all of the "digital vs analog" listeners could all get there fill. (well put by the way - Marc ;) ) Oh! And what should we have for reference music? I think we should have a variety for all of our different music tastes! I just recently received the new Radiohead "The best of" on 180 Gram. One thing I know for sure that we will be using is Tara Labs interconnects. I'm really excited about this and I'm thinking we could do this near the middle to end of this Month of July! Hope to see some feedback soon!

-Andres

OH! And check out our website to see the products we carry if you would like to get some inside info on us.

Well, I guess I will leave my flash drive at home. But I am in anyway. Thank you Andres, for the invitation. Just let me know when.

Harvey, great user name, how appropriate :)

Tom, great rave. Your system sounds fantastic. You have done a great job matching components. I would love to hear an A/B with the AR interconnects some time.

Sincerely,
Scot
I would welcome the opportunity to hear a great turntable set up and maybe some of the conrad-johnson tube products. Jazz, classical and female vocals or piano would be nice.
I live in Centerville and can bring some wine or other refreshments.
Hey Andres,

I would love to meet at the store to listen to equipment. Interested in listening to Thiel 3.7 and great intergrated amp. Coudl it be scheduled for after July 16 (out of town)

Phil B (your eclectic music friend from Cincy)
How would a Thursday July 23rd Work? I'd say between 5pm-7pm? People could start showing up around 4 though to get a bit more time in the room. I think for this for this first time we could just keep it light. We will have some refreshments and snacks for everyone! Oh, and I forgot to mention for those "digital users" with a blackberry storm or iPhone (or iPhone touch) Bring in your stuff with uncompressed music on it. I'm getting in a new toy from Chord Electronics Ltd. that will be a lot of fun to try out and critique! Fun times ahead!
I'd have trouble driving up to Dayton on a weekday, particularly since I play softball on Thursday nights, and not even audio can interfere with that.
I should be able to make it up to Dayton do you have any directions I will be coming from Northern Kentucky. Marc ----- lake513 ------
Andres,

I'm planning to be there on Thursday. I'm really looking forward to it.----Tom--TIC---Reubent

Report on the gathering at Hanson:

To Andreas, Troy and the gang at Hanson, thanks. It is obvious that you all have worked very hard to make it a great experience to visit your store. Too often, I think we lose the "fun factor" with this hobby, but I imagine that it would be hard not to enjoy oneself at Hanson. From the attitude and knowledge of the staff to the killer coffee maker to the decor, it was all a blast. All of this before I even mention the listening.
First let me say that if you were not able to come to the meeting, you should get up there and visit. We got to listen to Simaudio and Bryston electronics (they are expecting new Conrad-Johnson gear soon); pro-ject turntables and sumiko cartridges; and speakers - how about Sonus Faber, 2 pairs no less as well as the beautiful Focal Utopia Scalas and the recent Thiel 3.7s. Many folks brought their own music to share and we were able to listen to many speakers back to back. Personally, I was really taken by a pair of the smaller Sonus Fabers driven by a simaudio i-7 integrated amp and believe it or not, the phono was a basic model pro-ject and under $100 sumiko oyster cartridge and very basic phono stage, but that baby sure made music.
The Hanson folks were totally cool with my rearranging their furniture and pushing the speakers around as well until it sounded right for me. They are definitely people that you would want to do business with in my humble opinion.
All totalled, we probably had 10 to a dozen folks come buy and I was so into it that someone said it was after 8, I had to check my watch. This was great all around and the drive from NKy wasn't even that bad and I hate to cross the river, but I would go again in a heartbeat.
Thanks again Andreas and feel free to pass on my opinion to your colleagues.

Tom Collins
Here, here. I got there late, and only was able to listen to the upstairs system with the Sim Audio/Moon electronics and Theil 3.7s and Sonus Fabers. It was a great time, and I thank the crew at Hanson Audio for hosting this event.
i seem to be posting a lot lately.

today i learned that local audio seller, lou hamilton has relocated to utah. i learned this because i went to audible elegance to listen to the wilson speakers they now carry. let me tell you, they should definitely be heard. they have the alexandras that replaced the watt/puppy series and the smaller sophias. in the big room, the alexandras are driven by mac 300watt tube monos with mac front end. the soundstage is huge and deep, the bass is all there and under total control, it makes you wish you had brought your entire music collection. you can tell its right from the very first note and they are not totally broken in yet. the sophias were in a smaller room hooked up to naim which i didn't feel was a great match for them, but i think they are potentially excellent as well.

Thank you everyone for coming up to Dayton Ohio to spend an evening with us! I really appreciated the turn out and the positive feedback we received in and out of the store.

Our best advertisement is you the consumer so please let your friends know about us!

Also for further reference we would like to hold other audio events in the future. We could do them on the weekend, per recommendation. Most of our vendors (Thiel, Focal, Dynaudio, Sonus Faber and Monitor Audio) would like to come to our store and do a "clinic" sometime. Let me know if there is any interest!

Again thank you for your time and lending us your ears!

-Andres (And the Hanson Audio Video Staff)
Hello I went there last weekend the "Wilsons" sounded terrible, there was no bass for sure and those amps sounded very un dynamic, I listened to take five brubeck and i know it very well it lacked any musicality so I left . That place is very un enligtened for sure.l asked them about a nordost pulsar points they sell and they said they have never heard them and had no idea what they would do in my system. when i was their 3 years ago they were anti analog and told me that a phono cart degrades significantly after 100 hours of play and i should go digital!!
nstigator: did you listen to the alexandras or sophias or both. i didn't like the sophias with the naim equipment either. as for vinyl, i have bought 2 turntables from them over the course of the last 4 years. not trying to change your mind, just get a little more info.
forgive my mistake guys, those were not alexandrias, but sashas i was commenting on. i looked at the website and realized my mistake.
Went by Audible Elegance. Wilson's were great. Great electronics pushing them.
I was up there about a week ago as well. The Sashas paired with the McIntosh gear was pretty remarkable. A couple of friends have remarked that the Mac gear should not be underestimated. Also the cut of music they picked was well recorded and had some influence on me.

The Sophias with the Naim gear was another story. But in my opinion is was more the room than the gear. One could ponder if the gear is a good match but I noticed the room was exceptionally live and no system would do well in that environment.
It is me again,

I could use some help with my Thorens TD-145 table/Rega RB300 arm . . . it has a Doug Olsen designed plinth and I have hard wired Cardas tonearm cable to the rca's recently. Now I can not get it to track properly. I would like to have it professionally set-up using my Benz Ace cartridge because apperently I can not do it on my own:) I am concerned that re-wiring the arm has messed something up. It worked fine (before my upgrade!) with the stock DIN cable from Rega.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Scot
Scot, do you have a good protractor and a digital scale? I have a decent scale and a good mirror protractor and would be happy to help.

Ed Morris
Sim Audio is releasing a new amplifier to replace the I7. The replacement will be the 700i. Also there will be a new DAC / CD Transport. It will be showing on Sim Audio Moons Website soon!
Greetings,
Sorry the short notice. I am posting to invite a few folks over for an impromptu listening session at my home this evening--6:30-7pmish. I have met some of you at a few gatherings over the last year--my name is Tim. I am on the eastern side of the city near Anderson. Eggleston Works Andra's, Spectral amplification. Camelot Uther, Genesis Digital Lens, and McIntosh front end. E-mail me at [email protected] and maybe we can put something together. Gotta take advantage of these rare free Friday nights!
happy listening,
Tim
Thanks to Tim for very enjoyable evening. Great system, good company and the best cup of coffee ever. thank you.

e
Great having everyone over last Friday evening. Hopefully we can do some listening again soon! Thanks for the positive feedback on everything from the system to the coffee, by the way.
Tim:
Lately, the group seems to be doing more small, impromptu get togethers like the
one you had. The large ones are nice, but you have the chance to get to know a
few folks better in the small setting. I would feel more comfortable calling
any of those guys or yourself now. Also, there is a better chance of getting
what you brought played. Thanks again.

Tom
Well Hello Everybody hope the summer was good to you all and your family . I see a few of us have had mini meetings - thats good - and I have just had a small one myself. Tom Collins, Ed morris and Bill Sullander were over today , Bill came with his deHavilland GM70 amps and The Running Springs Audio Dmitri power conditioner -DAMN DAMN DAMN that darn power conditioner . That RSA Dmitri made the biggest improvement in My system I have ever heard with any eq. change WOW , we all sat in disbelief and awe at the seeming power increase, deeper solid bass , blacker background , larger soundstage ,dynamics we could find no flaws with it just more musical in every way. We switched amps back and forth a few times and I will have the amps and the RSA Demitri till next Sunday so I will be doing more testing this week but damn that Demitri sounds good real good. Bill also changed the output tube in his amps [ GM 70 tubes ] to a copper plate the best his amps have ever sounded and not by a small margin . I still want to try a solid state amp in my system [ stereo or mono blocks ] bring a bi wire speaker cable along also to see what a good SS amp will sound like . Hey guys just drop me a email or call if you have some time for a listen or bring a amp along for some fun
thanks for having us marc. i had a great time. good listening. sorry i had to run off like that and miss the dmitri. ed told me it was amazing. that's too bad, one more thing for the list.
see you soon.
Marc,I had a great time listening with you Bill and Tom.These smaller meetings are really fun and revealing. I was truly amazed by the Dimitri power conditioner. It completely transformed what was already a great system. This is a 'can't live without" kind of piece.
I thought Bill's Dehavilands were extraordinary, with power that I would never expect from a SET.

I look forward to our next "meeting".

just say the word if you want to hear mine.
Happy New Year! I just thought I would post something for 2010 so anyone surfing these pages wouldn't assume the Cincinnati audiophile scene is dead.

Any cool Cincinnati music goings-on? Find a new great spot to buy vinyl or try out gear? Drop a line!
I have some new babies. I brought home a pair of Dali Helicon 800 speakers yesterday. I will be updating the pictures on my system thread shortly. If anyone is interested in hearing these relatively unknown speakers, shoot me an email or call at 859-356-3100 and I would be happy to have folks stop by.
I have also recently upgraded to the Nottingham Space deck with an unusual vintage arm from Mission Acoustics playing with a benz woodbody cart and Lukashek phonostage.

Tom Collins
Hi Tomcollins,

I have had a set of Dali Ikons and an Ikon subwoofer for about three years. I would really enjoy listening to the Helicons.
I've had the full Dali treatment for surround sound for the past 2 years and absolutely love it. Helicon 400's in front and the helicon center channel (reconfigured 400) and the wall mounted surrounds (reconfigured 300's). The sound coming out of these relatively small speakers is truly amazing.
Barleby:

That's a beautiful looking setup you have. I'll bet it's great.

I go home for lunch. So I started work on positioning the speakers properly for best sound. These are pretty large. My room just sucks the lower bass right out of the speakers so I am fighting that.

Any other Dali owners in Cinti?

Tom
Dont forget to come to the Capital Audiofest on June 11-13. We have a good lineup! www.capitalaudiofest.com
