Synergy - SO Important


I keep going back and forth between my PAD & Audio Magic 

speaker cables every month or so.  This system can really

show changes per component.  The Audio Magics give more

detail and a little more depth to the sound stage.  Just a tad 

less body/weight/warmth.  The PAD’s are a live show.  I can 

change that up with a tube swap that makes the PAD’s too mushy

and less detailed, the AM’s more fleshy.  A Rectifier tube has

proven three times to make audible difference.  A subwoofer’s 

addition has been as transformative as great tubes and room acoustics.

I’ve had amazing success with inefficient speakers and battery power

integrates paired with different speaker wire gages.  All through being a

cheap audiophile, but willing to push a budget once in a while and a lot

 of experimentation.  Everything matters, what a fun , and at times, exhausting, hobby!

@ghedger42 On the surface it seems simple, but cable design is a mix of art and science. I have been through quite a few pairs of speaker cables, both on the low and higher end of things, and wire gauge is not an indicator of results. I recently upgraded to some Audience speaker cables which are quite thin, and they do everything that my previous firehoses did, and more. Keep an open mind and conduct your own experiments. 

I once saw a documentary about water fountains. the science to make water behave in a desired fashion was amazing. I’m sure that braiding, twisting and flattening of cable will have a conductive difference. I guess they don’t teach that in electrical engineering school.

Just to clarify:

Slight changes in resistance in cabling (a fraction of an ohm) may have a very subtle impact on the system, particularly crossover networks (RC filters, where changing the R will slightly adjust the resonant frequency), but the impact should be negligible.  Better to address these things starting from a baseline of the lowest resistance possible (usually 12-gauge wire should do the trick).  Inductance (L) from wiring is not likely to be a factor way down at audio frequencies.

It is a true statement that a thinner conductor of one material can outperform a thicker conductor of another.  Here are the numbers for resistance of 10 feet of common materials used in wiring, for two common speaker gauges - notice 14-gauge silver (thinner) beats 12-gauge aluminum:

14 AWG
Aluminum - 0.0416388 Ω
Copper -   0.0254507 Ω
Silver -   0.0234665 Ω

12 AWG
Aluminum - 0.0261869 Ω
Copper -   0.0160061 Ω
Silver -   0.0147582 Ω


So yes, wiring/cabling can have a minor impact, but you do not need to spend an arm and a leg on it.  Just understand the underlying principles. Has nothing to do with branding and everything with material science.
