Why can some speakers disappear so effortlessly? (Fritz's Carbon 7 SE Mk 2)

My Perlisten S7t speakers disappear, it took a little tweaking of the tow in and the distances from back and side walls but now that I have that dialed in they vanish.

200 dollars for that scanspeak woofer, 220 or so for that scanspeak tweeter, a very garage diy lookin homedepot box.... Fritz wants 3k/pair?

Hmm, I suppose the cost of living's a bit high in southern california...property tax probably went up again...I mean, he could always move his garage to Missourah, be less bourgeois, more blue collar and charge 1100/pair...

OP, why don't you get this chorus monitor for $300, compare and report back about disappearance acts, midrange and so on...

P.S. The disappearing act can be facilitated by very minor phase adjustments. Enormous speakers can disappear like no tomorrow, no problem, if you know what you're doing. It doesn't have to be some dinky li'l shoe box to make it disappear. Yamaha, etc used to have data on this kinda stuff in the public domain.

I think it’s not as much the speaker brand as it is a dedicated room acoustic. My Usher Mini Diamond Two still disappear in my small room. Any time I sit down to listen, I know it’s gonna be a 6 hour event, at least.

Driver cost isn't the argument. Crossover design, cabinet construction, bracing, finish work, voicing, and the actual engineering time that goes into making those parts work together — that's most of what you're paying for, and it's also most of what determines whether a speaker disappears or not. Anyone can buy the same drivers Fritz uses. Getting them to integrate this cleanly, this consistently, across amps and rooms, is the hard part, and it's the part that doesn't show up on a parts invoice.

On the cost-of-living dig: that's not really a fair knock. Skilled labor and design time cost what they cost regardless of zip code, and a one-man shop hand-building crossovers and finishing cabinets to order isn't padding margin to cover property tax — he's pricing the actual hours in the product.

I'll pass on the Tekton comparison. I've heard a good range of speakers at a good range of prices over the years, and the Carbons are the ones I keep coming back to post about six years later. I've heard Tektons -- they sound like crap. That's the whole reason I'm here — not because I haven't heard cheaper alternatives, but because I have. And more expensive ones. Fritz beats every bookshelf I've tried.

Fair point on phase and disappearance, though — that's real, and it's not exclusive to small monitors. But the Fritz disappear BETTER.
