@n80 I’m listening to The Red Clay Strays “Live At The Ryman” album (2024 release) on Tidal. It’s pretty good! Didn’t know about this band prior to this post. So for this, thank you!
Why I don't think I'll ever return to vinyl - brief rant
I am not a vinyl guy. I have a half decent turntable and a half decent cartridge and a mid-fi at best phono preamp.
But I do get the bug every now and again and will buy a vinyl album. These are mostly from new-ish artists. I buy them from their websites hoping to support them. Sometimes I am rewarded. Mac Saturn’s only album sounds really good. The Tesky Brother’s album Run Home Slow sounds amazing and is better than the CD and streaming options. I suspect it is less compressed.
Well, the bug bit again recently and I bought the Red Clay Stray’s double live album recorded at Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. It was $45 on their website. There is no CD for this album. The vinyl is thin. The edges are rough. They had some type of dusty residue on them. At then end of one of the album sides there was a spot that looked like some sort of stain or smudge. I cleaned the records and got all the residue off of them. But the one side with the stain on it, that produces an audible pop, would not come clean. The pop persists. It is at the very end of a song, mostly in the crowd noise but it still sucks.
I contacted ’support’ on their website but never got a reply. No big deal. Its $45 and it supports a band that I like.
But that sure puts me off from buying more vinyl.

OMG what glorious nitpicking… go revise some liner notes or something… for those of us, imo of course, who have seen the arc of n80 posts and should know him as an earnest dude sharing a rant… and for all the tough guy serious vinyl dudes, the quality control at the vaunted brands sucks….. of course Deming had to leave America to find people who might listen.,, n80 are you still flogging the Miata ? |
@tomic601 Its actually a Nissan 350z and I mostly get flogged _by_ Miatas. In the corners anyway. I'm still instructing but only going to the track about 3 times a year. @audphile1 I just recently discovered the Red Clay Strays myself and I am simply addicted. I posted in another thread that I'd bought tickets for a show in October. I've never paid that much for tickets but I can't wait to see them. Among many factors one of the things I like about them is that they are a _band_ that is making headway in a market in which new bands have become kind of uncommon compared to individual singers. My first impression of the lead singer, Brandon Coleman, was that he had an interesting and unique voice. For many singers, even some great singers, being unique is all it takes. Like Geddy Lee for instance. He is a great singer (one of my favorites) but you wouldn't say he has a great all around voice. But, as I listen to their music more and watch YT live sessions I now feel that he has a great voice and a depth of vocal talent and control. And for any hard core vinyl fans, the Red Clay Strays recently released a limited number of vinyl albums that claim to be high quality. I'd love to hear a report on their actual quality. Finally, I'm not anti-vinyl. It may not be for me but I'm glad people are into it regardless of the level, even the hipster kids listening to them on cheap turntables. I'm also into photography and in a similar way film is making a comeback. I used to do my own developing and printing and from time to time I'll shoot film again but it just doesn't do it for me anymore. But, I'm glad it is coming back and thrilled that others are enjoying it. |
