HiFi Kit Building- have you ever built any hifi gear?

Way back, building a hifi component from a kit was an available alternative from many manufacturers; today, not do much.

Have you ever built any gear from a kit? I’ve built two Bottlehead headphone amplifiers.

I built 4 Heahkits.  Best were a small integrated around 1974 and then a power amp that was supposed to match with a preamp they offered.  I did not care for the preamp but was advised tha amp was compatible with the Hafler Preamp I built.

Always best to take a broader view when subjects are insular, as this one is looking to be.

There are other reports also able to be read, which I feel confident are accurate in content.

As a university freshman at UW-Madison WI, I purchased a Dynaco SCA-80Q kit and a pair of The Smaller Advent Loudspeakers from The Happy Medium. I soldered the kit together at my tiny dorm room desk, Of course, I made a mistake, and the amp did not power up. A trip back to the store, and few days with their tech solved that, and my roommate’s pair of Advents and a Dual 1215 table with a Shure M91 were added to the loudest, proudest system on our floor. We had created the center of gravity! I still have that Dynaco, dead and sitting on my desk, the base for a Linn Kan speaker.

Yes, I built a Hafler DH110 Preamp and a DH220 power amp in the 80s. They worked great. Had them till I bought some used Bryston amps around 2000.
