Non Rega cartridge suggestions on a P6

Who is using a non rega cartridge on a rega p6 turntable?  I understand that there may be some interference issues when using a heavier album or a turntable mat. I have not found physical dimensions of the rega cartridges. Do I understand that some cartridges may require a heavier counterbalance on the tonearm? Then does the dust cover clearance come into play?

Denon DL-110 HO MC sounds fantastic on my P3.  Not exactly apples to apples comparison, but the smooth detailed sound, and reduced surface noise is a nice upgrade.  I would avoid any Grado MI carts.

FWIW, not specific to Rega just a general observation from having set up several turntables using a variety of cartridges and using AnalogMagik software, VTA is not super critical.  Put it this way, the difference in sound when VTA is correct versus when it is either high or low is very difficult to detect until the discrepancy is quite large.

until the discrepancy is quite large

I calculate that the normal Horizontal Tracking Error from a 9" pivoting tonearm is about the same as Vertical Tracking Errors caused by changing the height of an adjustable tonearm by 8-mm vertically, which is considerably more than the 3-mm shim being discussed.

Is this the sort of discrepancy you have in mind?

I find that a VTA adjustment changes the sound and it’s very audible with a cartridge like the Hana ML or Umami Blue. Might take some time to dial it in. That’s why having a VTA adjustment capability is pretty important, at least to me.
