Room treatment with acoustic panels
Most folks on here consider this a no-brainer as far as it being necessary but people new to the hobby may wonder if it’s worth the expense. YES!
I never used them before because I knew nothing about them. With my newly created system I figured I would give them a shot so I’ve been getting a lot of help and advice with them from GIK Acoustics.
I ordered bass traps for the corners and side walls. I also bought the panels that go on the side walls for the "first reflection" spots and the panels that mount to the ceiling.
Not everything has arrived yet but yesterday I started placing some of the side wall panels.
Even just temporarily resting on blocks of wood while placement is finalized, the difference is extremely and immediately noticeable. Fuller, cleaner sound that makes the speakers disappear.
Boy, I can’t wait to get everything installed! If you’re new at this and think your gear already sounds good, treat the room anyways. You will love the difference.
GIK Acoustics will refund your money if you don’t. Probably something they’ve never had to worry about I’m sure.

The discerning audiophile most likely will have issues, I get it, but the visual aspects of a room are just as important to me. |

It hasn't been easy choosing the right fabric and color. GIK offers great fabrics from Guilford of Maine and Camira. I'm torn between white clouds or brown clouds and have several color swatches on the way. Knowing me I'll get fed up and leave everything alone with no clouds lol. But the Amplitude panels in Walnut do look really good from the photos I've found on line. |
A search will enable a large range of decorative wall panels to be discovered in a large range of Panel Dimensions, which can be aesthetically finished to any colour or even coated with a Veneer finish. The Fretted Fascia Panel, when aesthetically treated, can have the inner face covered in a fine mesh screening and be mounted onto a Picture Frame, which is produced to a dimension that has a depth that enables a 35Kg/m3 Rockwool or equivalent used as a batt that is a minimum thickness of 50mm (2") to be used to fill the void. A spacing must be maintained between the Rockwool Batt inner face and the structural wall the panel is mounted on. The void is the most efficient way to use the panel, as the bounce-back of the transferred energy across the void is better managed when a void is present. A cotton sheet can be used to close off the rear of the panel. It is without doubt highly effective, attractive finished acoustic control panels are able to be produced for much less of an outlay, which is quite different to costs seen for an almost identical performing product. |
@toddsyr any updates on your GIK treatments you'd like to share? It's been great dealing with Mike from GIK and I'm excited to finally order my panels! I had a difficult time choosing the fabric and colour as architecture and room ethetics are equally important to me than sound alone and I didn't want to compromise one for the other. GIK offers great products and with some extra thought, several napkin sketches and CAD drawings I came up with a way that I believe I can integrate the panels seamlessly without sacrificing style for sound. For the ceiling I'm choosing GIK 90hz panels but I'm framing them with wood boxes and trim to create a look that's homogeneous to the rest of the room. It kind of reminds me of Frank Lloyd Wright. These panels will be illuminated during intimate nightly jazz sessions. The fabric is Intermix Smoky Quartz by Guilford of Maine. And for the front wall I'll be going with GIK 60hz and 100hz Amplitude bass traps with a Walnut front plate and with the sides also wrapped with Intermix Smoky Quartz fabric. With the help of AutoCAD and AI rendering tools I was able to render my room with my proposal. I'm in the process now of detailing the layout and formulating the shop drawings on AutoCAD. I'm very excited to say the least. In an earlier discussion a gentleman commented on my room and suggested that acoustically it was terrible and that I should just enjoy the wonderful space. And this really got me thinking so I spent countless days and nights exploring all kinds of acoustic treatments and made it a personal mission of not giving up.
