@islandflyfisher2 You've done a great job on your DIY treatments it would appear from your system pics - kudos! And DIY is certainly a good route if tools, experience, and time are plentiful and I'm sure there's lots of other threads that discuss this. For my DIY treatments, I build a very large and heavy wooden Skyline diffuser, and large polyfusers that came from a Sono tube that was 12' long with a 4' diameter; I cut it into 3 wedges/slices(?) and built end caps and covered with black cloth while another I did in wooden veneer and stained it. I also use angled boards where it makes sense. Happy listening.
Room treatment with acoustic panels
Most folks on here consider this a no-brainer as far as it being necessary but people new to the hobby may wonder if it’s worth the expense. YES!
I never used them before because I knew nothing about them. With my newly created system I figured I would give them a shot so I’ve been getting a lot of help and advice with them from GIK Acoustics.
I ordered bass traps for the corners and side walls. I also bought the panels that go on the side walls for the "first reflection" spots and the panels that mount to the ceiling.
Not everything has arrived yet but yesterday I started placing some of the side wall panels.
Even just temporarily resting on blocks of wood while placement is finalized, the difference is extremely and immediately noticeable. Fuller, cleaner sound that makes the speakers disappear.
Boy, I can’t wait to get everything installed! If you’re new at this and think your gear already sounds good, treat the room anyways. You will love the difference.
GIK Acoustics will refund your money if you don’t. Probably something they’ve never had to worry about I’m sure.

GIK Amplitude bass traps 60hz and 100hz GIK ceiling panels 90hz with scatter plates Given the constraints of my room architecturaly I think this layout works acoustically as it does visually. The discerning audiophile most likely will have issues, I get it, but the visual aspects of a room are just as important to me. |

It hasn't been easy choosing the right fabric and color. GIK offers great fabrics from Guilford of Maine and Camira. I'm torn between white clouds or brown clouds and have several color swatches on the way. Knowing me I'll get fed up and leave everything alone with no clouds lol. But the Amplitude panels in Walnut do look really good from the photos I've found on line. |
